Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm dresser that makes quite an annoying squeaking noise when opening and closing the drawers. I suspect it might be due to the slides or moving parts, but I am not completely sure.

I am mainly interested in how to effectively and permanently stop the squeaking without having to remove the drawers entirely or replace any parts. What methods or materials work well to solve this issue?

Are there specific lubricants or simple household remedies that reliably fix the problem? And should I focus more on cleaning the slides or lubricating them to achieve the best result?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

How often does anyone really take the time for such a thorough cleaning?

You’re probably right, Josefane. But for me, the goal is to find a long-term solution. I’m definitely willing to invest some time if it means peace of mind afterward.

At the moment, I open and close the drawers several times a day, so the annoying squeaking is quite frustrating and really disruptive.

I will try your suggestions and report back on what worked best. Thanks in advance for the expert feedback and the different perspectives!

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to add that sometimes small assembly errors during construction can cause squeaking.

In my case, two screws on the rails were slightly loose, which caused the drawer to make noise when moving. After tightening the screws with a screwdriver, the noise stopped.

If you have just assembled your chest of drawers, it’s worth checking all the screws again.

And as Katan already mentioned – having the drawer sit evenly is important, otherwise unnecessary friction occurs. Good luck to you all! 🙂

Thank you, Elodie, that makes sense. Today I will completely empty my dresser and check the rails as well as all the screws, tightening them if necessary.

I will also first try cleaning with isopropanol and then follow up with silicone spray.

I will get back to you as soon as I know more!
