Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that the drawers on my IKEA Brimnes nightstand are difficult to open and sometimes even get stuck. I suspect this has to do with the drawer slide mechanism—perhaps the drawers are warped or the installation wasn’t ideal.
Has anyone had experience with how to permanently prevent the sticking on Brimnes drawers? I’m particularly interested in solutions beyond simple readjustment, such as lubricants, installation tolerances, or modifications to the side profiles.
It would also be helpful to know if there are recommended methods that don’t require special tools, as my toolkit is quite limited.
Thanks for your advice!

I can provide a detailed approach to effectively prevent sticking in the Brimnes drawers.
1. Check the drawer slides: Brimnes drawers typically use metal runners with plastic rollers. Carefully inspect that all rollers move freely and are not damaged.
2. Installation accuracy: For IKEA furniture, it is crucial to install the side panels perfectly vertically. Even slight deviations can cause friction. Use a spirit level or at least a straight edge to check the side profiles.
3. Tolerance check: Brimnes uses particleboard, which can warp slightly due to moisture. Ensure the environment is as dry as possible and that there is no water contact.
4. Lubrication: Silicone spray is ideal because of its thin coating. Avoid oil-based lubricants, as they attract dust and can cause the runners to stick over time.
5. Drawer adjustment: If the drawer does not slide out smoothly, slightly loosening the screws on the runners and gently adjusting the drawer position can help. Be careful not to loosen them too much to avoid wobbling.
6. For extreme cases: Using thin plastic or felt pads at the contact points between the drawer and side panels can reduce friction.
Finally, it would be helpful if you could specify whether the sticking occurs during the entire movement or only at the beginning or end of opening/closing. This information would allow for more specific advice.

1. Checking the drawer slides: Brimnes usually comes with metal runners and plastic rollers. Carefully check that all rollers move freely and are not damaged. This sounds exactly like the issue I struggled with as well. I was worried the drawers might eventually wear out completely. What really helped me was to proceed very gently and keep testing repeatedly before making further adjustments.
I understand your frustration when you constantly have to fiddle with something and end up with drawers that won’t open. But it’s worth tackling the problem step by step. Some people might not realize how delicate the rollers are.
I’m curious if the original poster already knows exactly where the sticking occurs. That often makes a big difference in how to approach the problem.
I sometimes had trouble with the Brimnes drawers sticking, but I was really happy when I tried silicone spray! It works great and makes opening and closing so much easier!
I also make sure not to overload the drawers. Sometimes you don’t even realize that too much weight puts stress on the slides.
If you have the chance, removing the drawers completely now and then to clean the runners is also a real boost for smooth operation! 😊

I suspect it has to do with the drawer’s sliding mechanism; they might be warped or the installation was not optimal. This assessment is quite accurate. The main causes of sticking in Brimnes drawers are:
- Inaccurate installation of the side panels, which restricts proper movement
- Dust, small debris, or even foreign objects in the sliding rails
- Dirty or worn plastic rollers
- Moisture causing particle board to warp, making the drawer edge catch
Recommended actions:
- Check the alignment of the furniture using a spirit level as a standard procedure
- Carefully remove rollers if necessary and clean both the roller and the rail, inspecting mechanically for damage
- Use only silicone spray or sprayable dry lubricants to prevent buildup
- Load the drawers up to the maximum specified weight
These steps will systematically reduce sticking. Replacement of damaged rollers is strongly advised if there is significant wear.
