Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific problem and hope for your expertise. I own several Billy shelves from IKEA, which have proven to be an excellent storage solution over time. However, my shelves constantly struggle with significant dust accumulation—both on the visible surfaces and in the corners and crevices.
My question is: What effective methods or strategies are there to permanently prevent dust buildup on Billy shelves or at least greatly reduce it? I am interested in both preventive measures and practical cleaning approaches that can be easily integrated into daily routines. Are there perhaps any special protective products or accessories you would recommend?
Looking forward to a variety of tips and your experiences!

Hey, if you need a bit of fun while dusting: some people swear by turning it into a mini-game called ‘Dust Bingo’ – basically, every few days you dust specific spots intentionally while playing a playlist, for example.
On the topic: I occasionally use an anti-static spray and make sure not to place my Billy bookcases directly next to carpets or frequently used windows, as more dust tends to come in there.
Dust-free? Staying that way with open furniture is a constant battle, but if you keep it fun, you’ll stick with it longer 😉

regular cleaning combined with environmental management works best.I agree! Additionally, I have had good experience with small seals for roof windows or doors that prevent fine dust from entering – this was once a topic in an allergy group.
I also recommend using slightly damp cotton cloths instead of dry ones, as they trap dust better. This reduces dust from being stirred up and accumulating in the room.
And honestly: a bit of calm acceptance is important. Dust is our constant companion, but with small tricks, it can be kept manageable 🙂
