Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific problem and hope for your expertise. I own several Billy shelves from IKEA, which have proven to be an excellent storage solution over time. However, my shelves constantly struggle with significant dust accumulation—both on the visible surfaces and in the corners and crevices.
My question is: What effective methods or strategies are there to permanently prevent dust buildup on Billy shelves or at least greatly reduce it? I am interested in both preventive measures and practical cleaning approaches that can be easily integrated into daily routines. Are there perhaps any special protective products or accessories you would recommend?
Looking forward to a variety of tips and your experiences!

It’s good that you asked such a precise question – that really helps. Unfortunately, dust accumulation is a natural result of air circulation and settling, especially on shelves with many edges and open surfaces like Billy.
From my experience, regular cleaning combined with ambient management works best. So not only dusting the shelves but also optimizing humidity and ventilation in the room. I recommend:
- Clean regularly (at least every 1–2 weeks) with a microfiber cloth, as this reduces static charge and thus the attraction of dust.
- Use air filters or air purifiers in the room to significantly reduce dust.
- Keep the shelves more closed (e.g., with doors) if possible – open shelf surfaces tend to collect more dust.
- Applying an antistatic treatment to the shelves, such as special sprays, can also help.
I hope this gives you a good initial overview. If you like, I can explain more about individual measures!
Hello tiusli,
I’ll add something regarding the topic of "open shelves": Billy shelves are typical for open designs, which tends to encourage dust buildup. One option is to retrofit the shelves partly with doors – IKEA offers, in addition to classic doors, glass doors that allow visibility while keeping dust out.
In addition, I have found it effective to regularly clean dust collectors with a vacuum cleaner attachment. This can sometimes be more thorough than just wiping, especially in corners and grooves.
I fully agree with that. It’s also important not to keep the room too dry; air that is too dry promotes dust formation.
If you’re interested, I can send you some product recommendations.

What effective methods or strategies are there to permanently prevent or at least greatly reduce dust buildup on Billy shelves? At this point, I would fundamentally question whether it is really possible to permanently prevent dust accumulation on Billy shelves. Dust mainly originates from airborne particles in the room—hair, fibers, skin flakes—that inevitably settle everywhere.
Preventive measures are certainly necessary, but completely avoiding dust on open shelving is, in my experience, an illusion. Therefore, the question is more about the most efficient way to manage it.
I also think it is helpful to specify the question further: What are the specific room conditions (humidity, ventilation habits, material properties)? The answer can vary significantly depending on the living situation.
A scientifically based answer therefore requires considering measurable factors rather than just offering cleaning tips.

Completely avoiding dust on open shelves is, in my experience, an illusion. That is basically correct. Dust is a natural part of indoor environments and can only be reduced, not completely eliminated.
It has been practically proven that a combination of the following measures is most effective in slowing down dust accumulation:
1. Using air purifiers with HEPA filters: They remove fine particles from the air.
2. Increasing indoor humidity to at least 40–50 %: Dust particles bind to moisture and remain airborne for a shorter time.
3. Regular cleaning with microfiber cloths or vacuum cleaners with specialized attachments.
4. If possible, sealing or coating shelf surfaces with an anti-static finish.
The latter requires more effort but is especially worthwhile for heavily used furniture pieces.
In short: lasting protection requires technical solutions and a combination of methods.
