Hello everyone,

I recently bought several IKEA Platsa wood panels to build a custom shelf. I noticed that the panels started to crack in some places, which obviously affects both the stability and appearance significantly. My question is: What is the best way to prevent cracks in IKEA Platsa wood panels?

I suspect that the cause might be related both to the material itself and to storage or assembly. Are there any specific tips for preparing, possibly treating the panels, or screwing them together to avoid such cracks?

I am especially interested in recommendations for preventive measures during assembly and use, as I want the shelves to be as durable and stable as possible.

Thank you in advance for your expertise!

To avoid cracks in Platsa boards, you should consider the following points:
- Pre-drill at the screw points
- Use appropriate screws, not too long or too thick
- Avoid excessive loads near the edges of the boards
- Ensure consistent humidity levels in the room
Usually, that is all that is needed.

The cause of cracks in IKEA Platsa wooden panels often lies in the combination of the material’s structure and installation errors. These panels are usually made of particleboard or MDF panels with a thin decorative layer, which is relatively sensitive to point pressure and fluctuations in moisture.

Here are some precise recommendations:

- Always pre-drill before screwing to protect the material from splitting.
- Screws should not be placed directly at the edge; keep a distance of at least 3-4 cm (1¼-1½ inches).
- Use screws with a suitable diameter to avoid excessive spreading of the material.
- For large surface applications, a thin protective coating (paint or special edge protection) is recommended to minimize moisture absorption.
- Store the panels flat and protected from extreme temperature fluctuations.

I also recommend reducing possible internal stress in the material before assembly by gently beveling the edges.

A brief guide on how to avoid cracks in IKEA Platsa wood panels:

1. Preparation:
- Check the panels for visible cracks before assembly.
- Store the panels flat and in a well-ventilated room for several days where they will be installed.

2. Pre-drilling:
- Use a sharp drill bit about 3 mm (1/8 inch) in diameter to prevent splitting.
- Always pre-drill at the intended screw locations, especially near the edges.

3. Screws:
- Thin particleboard screws are ideal.
- Tighten screws only by hand; avoid over-tightening.

4. Edges and protection:
- Seal exposed edges with paint or special edge protection profiles to prevent moisture penetration.

5. Assembly:
- Avoid stresses by not bending the panels.
- Ensure accurate fitting during assembly so that loads are evenly distributed.

Summary: The key is careful pre-drilling and gentle screwing combined with proper storage and component protection. This will significantly reduce the risk of cracking.

That has also proven very helpful for me. At first, I had many cracks because, due to space constraints, I sometimes screwed too close to the edges.

I also want to say that it’s understandable how frustrating such damage can be, especially with expensive furniture parts. That’s why I find the storage tips very important—they are often underestimated.

I now always store panels on two parallel wooden battens to ensure air circulation. If desired, you can even place a thin sheet of foil over the surface as protection when dust or moisture accumulates in the environment. Sometimes that little extra effort helps a lot, even if it sounds simple.

Targeted treatment of the wooden boards before installation is indeed effective. For Platsa boards, I recommend sealing freshly cut or processed edges with a wood preservative or at least a clear wood varnish.

This prevents moisture penetration, which can cause the material to expand and crack, especially in older or poorly ventilated rooms. Additionally, it makes screwing easier and reduces splintering.

A small additional tip: when using strip hinges or angle hinges, I suggest doing a test installation in an inconspicuous area first to ensure that no excessive stress occurs that could cause cracks.

Prevention therefore starts with proper handling even before screwing.
