Hello everyone,

I recently acquired several Malm furniture pieces from the well-known Swedish furniture company and would like to know how to effectively prevent cracking in these items. Specifically, I am concerned about using them in a typical living environment where temperature fluctuations and humidity are common.

I am interested in whether there are specific care methods or home remedies that are particularly suitable for the melamine resin or surface to avoid stress in the material. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any surface care products that have proven effective as protection.

I would also appreciate tips on the best placement of the furniture (e.g., distance from heaters or windows) and general advice on handling and cleaning.

Thank you in advance for your expertise!

Early detection of small cracks is an important first step.

To prevent further cracking, you should definitely reconsider the placement of furniture. Areas near windows are problematic due to temperature fluctuations and potential moisture issues from condensation.

Using mild dish soap with water is acceptable, but reducing moisture is essential: always thoroughly dry the surface after cleaning.

Consistent room temperature and controlled humidity (ideally around 50%) are crucial.

Good air circulation around the furniture is also beneficial to avoid trapped heat or moisture.

If the furniture surface is already damaged, consider using repair fillers or specialized repair kits for melamine surfaces to prevent further moisture penetration.

That’s really helpful! Thanks for the clear advice! 🙂

I can definitely confirm this! I rearranged my furniture exactly that way, and the cracking has decreased for me.

One more thing: Do you use any specific care products? I once tried a melamine care oil—does anyone have experience with that? 🙂

This is undoubtedly an important factor, but I would like to ask critically: Is there reliable data on how much distance is actually sufficient?

Additionally, I wonder whether the mechanical anchoring of the furniture also plays a role, for example, if it is fixed to the wall, since movement under stress can promote cracks.

Furthermore, could small cracks on the edges also result from production-related variations in the coating?

I would find it helpful if we could address the causes more specifically here, instead of just giving general care tips.

I haven’t measured it myself, but in my experience, 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) is enough. More certainly doesn’t hurt!

Good idea! I secured my cabinets to the wall, which adds stability and prevents unwanted movement. I definitely recommend it, especially for larger cabinets!

Since we’re having a good discussion here: For those less keen on chemicals, simple furniture waxes are also an option—they protect and look nice too.

I love it when my furniture shines beautifully while staying protected! 🙂
