Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to use Ikea Platsa furniture as a room divider in an open-plan living space. I want to understand the best way to arrange the furniture pieces to create a room layout that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective.

Specifically, I am interested in how to use the PLATSA modules to effectively separate the living and working areas without restricting the openness of the space too much. I am also curious about which specific modifications, such as door options, shelving inserts, or lighting, work best to make the room divider not just a visual barrier but also a storage solution that adds value.

What are your thoughts? What experiences do you have using PLATSA as a room divider, and how can this system be best presented when recommending it to friends or clients?

Thank you for your input!

I would recommend choosing the PLATSA modules with a combination of open and closed units. Open shelves look lighter and visually break up the space, while closed elements provide storage.

A good mix works well as a room divider. For added effect, you can install LED strips.

Hello Karehau,

Your project is very interesting, and I see several key points that are important for presenting PLATSA furniture as room dividers.

First, you should emphasize the modularity. PLATSA furniture is flexible and can be easily adapted to different room sizes and needs. This is an advantage that should be clearly communicated when setting up a room structure.

From a technical perspective, you should also mention that the system can be used in various heights (e.g., 35, 50, 70 cm (14, 20, 28 inches), as well as 128 cm and 192 cm (50 and 76 inches)) to design wall height, passage height, and privacy screening according to the situation. For a room divider, the medium height is often suitable to provide enough privacy without completely enclosing the space.

Additionally, I recommend highlighting the storage space. Depending on how the room is used—living or working area—doors and drawers should be prioritized to store items neatly and keep the area organized.

For aesthetics, lighting elements (as mentioned by Marcellela) are very important. LED strips or indirect lighting within the shelves not only improve visibility inside the storage but also highlight the room divider itself.

Furthermore, you should clearly state that PLATSA furniture is easy to dismantle. This is an important factor for many users, as room layouts often change over time.

My tip: When presenting, always stay practical and show examples of use. Visualizations (e.g., sketches) are extremely helpful to convey the flexibility and visual possibilities of PLATSA furniture.

What are your room dimensions, and approximately how tall should the room divider be?

Thanks for the detailed tips, Domau0.

The room dimensions are approximately 5 x 8 meters (16 x 26 feet), and the room divider should be no more than 1.50 m (5 feet) high to maintain openness while still creating a clear separation between the living and work areas.

I’m interested in which door and shelving options you consider particularly suitable for this purpose. Additionally, I think it’s important not to overlook stability despite the width.

What are your thoughts on attachment and safety, especially when there are children in the household? I believe this aspect is often underestimated during planning.
