Hello everyone, I have several Ikea Platsa shelves at home that unfortunately start to wobble visibly after some time. These are the modular shelves with metal frames and wooden fronts. My question is: What long-lasting measures can I take to ensure these shelves stand firmly and without any play, preventing wobbling even after extended use? I am looking for practical solutions that can be implemented with common household items or simple tools. I am especially interested in whether there are specific attachment points that are often overlooked or any assembly tips to secure stability permanently.
Hello Ronlo, to address your issue effectively, here is an overview for the permanent stabilization of Ikea PLATSA shelves: - First, check that all screws and connectors are properly tightened, as they often loosen with use and cause wobbling. - Always use the wall fasteners provided by Ikea; these are the most important elements for stability. There are special metal brackets that are screwed to the back of the shelves and the wall. - Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom of the shelf to compensate for uneven floors. Often the furniture wobbles simply because it is not standing level. - Optionally, you can reinforce the back panels with additional wooden boards if the shelf feels very flexible inside. - Avoid overloading individual shelves or incorrect arrangement, as this also affects stability. Common mistakes include - connectors not tightened properly - missing wall fastening or incorrect installation of the same - unfavorable placement with uneven flooring I hope this helps you further!

Be sure to use the wall mountings provided by Ikea; they are the most important stabilization element. This statement is accurate and important. Additionally, it is recommended to check the type of wall before installing the brackets – drywall, concrete, brick, etc. Depending on this, appropriate anchors should be used to ensure a secure and lasting hold.
Furthermore, the corner connectors (also called cam locks) used in the metal profiles are often a weak point in unstable PLATSA shelving units. It is worth checking that they are fully tightened and not damaged.
The combination of firmly tightened corner connectors, solid wall mounting, and careful adjustment of the leveling feet is the best long-term solution to prevent wobbling.

Check that all metal guides fit flush and correctly together during assembly. Small gaps can occur especially at the joints of the metal frames, which may later lead to instability. 2. If possible, add a thin OSB board or rigid MDF panel at the back as reinforcement. This should be nailed or screwed to the frame and significantly increases rigidity. 3. Make sure to use the right tools – a cordless drill with torque control helps prevent over-tightening or under-tightening screws. 4. For wall fixing: use heavy-duty anchors suitable for your wall material. For drywall, cavity anchors or metal toggle anchors are essential, and for masonry use appropriate plastic or metal anchors.
All these measures together ensure long-lasting durability and minimize wobbling permanently.
