Hello everyone, I have been experiencing a persistent and loud squeaking issue with the hinges on my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets for quite some time. Despite repeated use and minor adjustments, the noise has not stopped. I assume it is due to the common metal-on-metal friction. I am particularly interested in how to permanently fix the hinges rather than just temporarily suppress the squeaking with lubricants. Are there proven methods or specific products that provide a lasting solution? Perhaps mechanical modifications or sustainable lubrication techniques? I appreciate any well-founded advice, as I like to do the work myself and prefer long-lasting solutions.

I assume this is the typical metal-on-metal friction. That seems like a reasonable initial assumption, but I would first consider whether contamination might be causing the squeaking. Often, foreign particles or dust are responsible for amplifying the hinge noise and become noticeable when combined with metal friction.
What have you tried so far? You mention a “minor adjustment,” but what exactly do you mean? Since a lasting solution usually requires proper mechanical adjustment, it would be helpful to know if the hinge, for example, is under tension or if any screws are loose. If you only mask the cause with lubricants, this might distort the actual problem or provide only a temporary fix.

In my experience, lubricants based on silicone or PTFE work best because they neither attract dust nor cause stickiness. It is important to apply them precisely on the joint areas and the spring.
In many cases, WD-40 or pure oil only provide short-term relief because they are either too thin or attract dirt. Thorough cleaning before applying the silicone spray results in a longer-lasting effect.

Here is a brief guide on how to permanently stop squeaking in IKEA Metod hinges:
- Loosen the hinge screws and remove the hinge
- Thoroughly clean with a lint-free cloth and some alcohol to remove dirt or old lubricant residues
- Hold the hinge parts movable and spray a small amount of silicone- or PTFE-based lubricant on all pivot points
- Wipe off any excess lubricant to prevent dirt from sticking
- Reinstall the hinge and tighten the screws by hand
- Adjust with the adjustment screws so the hinge is neither too tight nor too loose
Common mistakes are using too much oil, which attracts dust, or applying lubricant to the damping mechanism, which can damage it.

I would like to add that it can also be helpful to check the hinge weight and door load. With a heavily loaded door, friction increases and so does the risk of squeaking.
Additionally, if the hinges are mechanically worn, even the best lubricant won’t provide a lasting solution. In that case, consider replacing the hinges, which is usually affordable and straightforward with IKEA parts.
