ᐅ How can I optimize the lighting inside IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets using LED lights?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install LED lighting in my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to optimally illuminate the work surfaces while creating a pleasant ambiance. My questions are: What is the best way to integrate the lighting into the cabinets, which types of LEDs are particularly suitable for the interior of Metod cabinets, and what should be considered regarding cable routing and power supply? It is also important for me to know which mounting methods have proven effective and if there are specific solutions that are as discreet and durable as possible. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Use only 12V LEDs, safety comes first.

That is a very important point. I would also emphasize that the 12V power supplies should be of good quality, as cheap products often flicker or fail early.

Additionally, I recommend testing all connections with a multimeter for continuity before final installation. This saves trouble later on.

If anyone plans to install LEDs in corners or hard-to-reach places, flexible LED strips with a high IP rating, such as IP65 or higher, are advisable to prevent moisture in areas near sinks.

I find it interesting that the discussion always focuses on LED strips and flat panels – but who says you can’t also install small spotlights? Especially with Metod cabinet doors, mini LED spots are a great option because they can be aimed precisely. Admittedly, the wiring is a bit more complex, but both visually and functionally, it has its advantages.

A bit of provocation on the side: Most people aren’t as satisfied with just the 'ambient' lighting as is often claimed. The main goal should really be better visibility inside the cabinet – and in my opinion, multiple focused light sources are more efficient than diffuse strip lighting.

That’s not a bad idea! Spotlights are like small miniature floodlights that create nice highlights.

Honestly – when I equip my Metod cabinet with LED lighting, I don’t just want to see what’s inside; I also want to add a bit of drama. 😉

Jokes aside: spotlights are great for accent lighting. For general illumination, however, strips are helpful because they can be arranged over larger areas. Maybe even a combination? Spotlights for highlights and LED strips for overall lighting.

Have you already decided whether you want to control the LEDs with a motion sensor or a switch?

Thank you for the detailed advice! I haven’t made a firm decision about the control method yet. A motion sensor sounds very convenient, especially to minimize energy consumption. However, I’m concerned whether the small sensors in the corners of my Metod cabinet doors will always work reliably without triggering too often (for example, if the door is only slightly ajar).

Perhaps you have experience with the best way to position the sensors so that they activate mainly when the door is fully opened? Or would a combination with an additional manual switch be advisable?

I also want to allow for an easy retrofit without having to make major modifications to the cabinets.
