Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am now at the stage of optimizing the lighting inside the cabinets. My goal is to achieve clear visibility of the contents through improved lighting, especially in the base cabinets and the wall cabinets with shelves. I am interested in which types of lighting work best, what mounting options you recommend, and if you have any experience with light colors or dimmability. It is also important for me to integrate the lighting with the existing electrical wiring of the Ikea kitchen to avoid any unsightly cables. Does anyone have tips or practical solutions they have implemented?

To optimize the lighting in Metod kitchen cabinets, it is essential to first clearly define the purpose of the lighting: Should it serve exclusively for visibility, or also create atmosphere? For better visibility, I recommend the following technical aspects:

- Use of cool white LED strips (4000-4500 K) for the clearest and most natural color rendering.
- Installation of the lights in positions that avoid casting shadows, usually along the upper inner edges or on the inside of the doors.
- Integration of sensor-controlled technology, ideally with door opening sensors, since motion detectors are less reliable inside closed cabinets.
- Use of a slim, energy-efficient power supply with sufficient output capacity, discreetly installed inside the cabinet carcasses.

Thoughtful cable management and high-quality connectors are the foundation for durability and reliable operation.

Are there any special considerations when installing a motion sensor in a Metod base cabinet? The doors close very tightly in some cases, and I’m concerned that the sensors may not respond reliably when closing.

I’m very familiar with this! In my experience, touch-sensitive sensors or so-called cabinet light switches mounted centrally at the top of the frame work most reliably. Motion detectors based on infrared or ultrasonic technology can sometimes be blocked by door seals or trigger falsely. Using a combination of a door sensor and a motion detector can help prevent the light from turning off during use.

Recommendation: Use LED strips with aluminum profiles. This ensures better heat dissipation and stability of the lighting fixtures. It is best to use 12V LED lights with flat connectors to make installation simple and safe. Motion sensors or door sensors are both feasible, depending on your preference.

To distribute light evenly, LED strips combined with frosted diffuser profiles are effective. They prevent spot lighting and create a pleasant glow, ideal for kitchen interiors.
