Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my older apartment and am facing some challenges that I am unsure how to handle. The walls are partly made of old masonry with some uneven areas, and there are no continuous wooden studs or beams to which the cabinets can be easily and securely attached.

My questions are therefore:
- How can I best optimize the installation of the Metod wall cabinets in such an environment to ensure a safe and permanently load-bearing fixing?
- Which materials or special anchors/screws are recommended for fastening into older masonry walls?
- How can I effectively prevent the cabinets from hanging crooked due to uneven masonry or becoming loose over time?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, preferably detailed, as I want to approach this thoroughly.

This is a common issue in older buildings, which can be resolved with a few simple steps. First, I recommend checking the exact composition of your walls using an appropriate drill or impact detector—this way you can identify hidden cavities or particularly load-bearing areas. For fastening cabinets to old masonry walls, heavy-duty anchors or specialized masonry anchors suitable for the specific material work well (e.g., expansion anchors for solid brick or chemical anchors for sandstone). Always pay attention to the load capacity to ensure the cabinets remain securely mounted over time.

To compensate for uneven walls, there are several options, including washers, spacer profiles, or even small wooden battens that can be screwed onto the wall to create a level surface. The latter is especially useful if you want to align the cabinets perfectly later on.

As a practical tip, I suggest installing the cabinets using a sturdy spirit level and possibly mounting aids (marking lines on the wall or templates). This helps prevent misalignment.

If you like, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide.

For old building walls, I recommend using chemical anchors or heavy-duty anchors. Pre-drill carefully with the appropriate drill bit.

To compensate for uneven walls, attach wooden battens and screw onto them. Never fix directly onto plaster, as this will not hold securely.

For older building walls, the most important foundation is to carefully assess the actual load-bearing capacity of the wall. Depending on the wall material (solid brick, hollow block, sandstone), specific anchors and fastening methods are required. I recommend the following approach:

- Use chemical injection anchors for porous or sandstone-like materials, as they provide excellent holding strength.
- Use heavy-duty masonry anchors for solid brick or concrete.
- Before installation, mount wooden or metal battens screwed onto the wall to create a flat mounting surface.
- When drilling, be sure to use the correct depth and drill bit type (masonry drill bit).
- Use a second person to ensure precise alignment during installation.

Additionally, I recommend distributing the load across multiple anchors rather than planning too closely. This significantly improves safety.

Why this is important: Older buildings undergo natural aging and sometimes develop cracks that can worsen with improper fastening. Therefore, it is better to work slowly, carefully, and correctly.

This is my favorite tip for situations like these! With a little trick, you can hang cabinets on uneven walls so they look as if they came straight from the furniture store.

Even better: use wooden battens of the same thickness, align them carefully, and use a spirit level to ensure perfect straightness. This way, you stay flexible and can easily add or adjust shelves later on.

Don’t worry: it may sound time-consuming at first, but it’s actually enjoyable when approached methodically. Like a small DIY project with visible results 😉 Good luck!
