ᐅ How can I optimize cable management solutions for IKEA Besta?

jekusiHello everyone, I am currently assembling an IKEA Besta unit as a media cabinet. I have a question that I haven’t found fully answered in any forum so far: How can I optimize cable management for a Besta system so that all cables are routed neatly, safely, and as invisibly as possible? It is important to me that this is not just a matter of roughly using a few cable ties, but rather a well-thought-out solution, ideally with multiple layers of cable routing – for example, behind the back panels of the furniture, inside the compartments themselves, and possibly using cable channels or groove systems. I am using several devices like a receiver, console, AV receiver, and a projector. Who has worked on similar projects and can share tips on how to organize the many cable strands neatly? I am especially interested in which IKEA components work well as a base for hiding or bundling cables, or whether custom solutions are worth considering. Thanks in advance!
Hello jekusi, your concern is very understandable and sounds interesting to implement. To optimize cable management in the IKEA Besta unit, I recommend a combination of different methods:
- Use cable channels or self-adhesive cable clips inside the cabinet, which can be discreetly attached to the back panel.
- For the area behind the shelves, it helps to work with flat cable ducts or flexible spiral sleeves.
- Many also use custom-made mounting frames or thin wooden strips to keep cables spaced and organize the interior.
- For cable bundles near devices, high-quality Velcro straps are better than cable ties, as they are reusable.
IKEA itself does not offer specific cable channels for Besta, so creative solutions are needed. It is also important to use power strips separated from the furniture to prevent heat buildup.
I’m curious if this already helps with your setup or if you need more details.

For the cable bundles on the devices, high-quality hook-and-loop straps are better than cable ties because they can be easily undone. That really sums it up well for me too. At first, I had such a mess with my Besta. It was quite stressful. But the combination of hook-and-loop straps and fixed mounts helped me a lot. The key is not to rush, but to take it step by step and get everything in its place.
Even with lots of cables, you’ll quickly get frustrated otherwise. I would also recommend making a sketch of where everything is located, so you don’t have to pull everything apart each time you want to rearrange something.
Wow, such an exciting topic! I really enjoyed perfecting the cable management on my Besta! 🙂
My advice would be to be bold and experiment with small custom-made wooden supports or plastic clips—especially for the back panel. Hidden cable channels are fantastic! And if you add LEDs, the cables don’t look so bad afterwards.
This way, you turn a cable mess into a truly nice project that you can be proud of! Good luck and keep at it; it’s definitely worth the effort!
