Hello everyone,

I have decided to equip my kitchen with IKEA Metod base cabinets. I am wondering how to make the best use of the available storage space in these cabinets. Specifically, I am interested in effective organization systems that allow for space-saving and clear storage of both smaller and larger kitchen utensils. It is important to me that the solution is practical for everyday use, flexible to different needs, and does not require unnecessary modifications.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to improve the storage capacity of Metod base cabinets using inserts, dividers, drawer organizers, or other modular systems? Which products or methods have proven successful, and what should one particularly consider during the planning stage?

I look forward to your tips and a productive discussion!

Hello Ino31,

your question is very well phrased, and I can share some practical tips from my own experience to help you optimize storage space in IKEA Metod base cabinets.

First of all, drawer organizers and inserts are especially useful as they can be used very flexibly. For example, there are sets made of plastic or wood that allow you to divide your drawers or cabinet shelves into smaller compartments. This is particularly helpful if you want to store smaller kitchen items like cutlery, cutting tools, or spices.

Additionally, you might consider using removable baskets or boxes, which increase flexibility because you can easily take them out when you need access to items placed deeper inside.

When planning, it is also important to measure the interior height of the cabinet carefully. With Metod, there are different carcass sizes, and depending on the drawer height or shelf height, you can choose different organizer sets.

Another tip: if you store large pots or pans, deep drawers with full-extension slides are recommended. They make accessing your items much easier.

If you want to know more about the different options, I’m happy to help!

Hey Ino31, I find this topic really interesting! I equipped my Metod base cabinets with IKEA’s own organizing sets plus additional drawer organizers — and I can tell you, it makes life in the kitchen much more relaxed!

That’s exactly what I did too: the large drawers with pull-outs are perfect for storing pans and bigger kitchen tools. I also use adjustable dividers that can be rearranged so I can customize the drawers as needed.

What I would also add — try using so-called utility organizers for your drawers. They keep everything in place, and you can organize not only cutlery but also small tools or kitchen gadgets in them.

I think it’s definitely worth taking the time to organize first instead of just throwing everything in. That way, you make the best use of the space!

Hello everyone,

to take the discussion further, I would like to address some technical details that are often overlooked but are crucial for optimizing storage space in IKEA Metod base cabinets.

First, precise measurement of the interior space is fundamental because it shows you the available heights, widths, and depths. For example, IKEA Metod cabinets come with different carcass depths (37 cm (15 inches) and 60 cm (24 inches)), and the usable interior space varies accordingly. This determines which inserts will actually fit.

Second, modularity is key. The Metod series is designed to be compatible with many typical IKEA organizers, but it is often worthwhile to consider third-party or custom solutions. In practice, this means:
- Using adjustable dividers that can be moved in width and height
- Drawer inserts with flexible compartments that can be reconfigured as needed
- Using stackable boxes in larger cabinets for optimal space utilization

Technical details such as the maximum load capacity of the drawers or the way they open should also be considered, as these affect how heavy the inserts can be and how easily accessible they are.

It would also be helpful to know exactly what you want to store. Is it mainly dishes, cooking utensils, pantry items, or a mix of these? The type of items strongly influences which organizing elements make sense.

Finally, a note on lighting inside the cabinet – good illumination, for example with LED light strips, makes it much easier to find things.

Could you briefly outline which items you mainly want to store and the exact size of your Metod cabinet? Then I can provide more targeted advice on possible systems.

Thank you very much for the helpful contributions!

To add some details: I have base cabinets with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches) and a cabinet body height of about 80 cm (32 inches). Mainly, I want to store cookware (pots, pans), various baking pans, as well as smaller kitchen utensils like whisks, spatulas, measuring cups, and also storage containers. Additionally, I have some spice jars that I want to keep as organized as possible.

It is also important to me that I can arrange the storage space flexibly, as my needs change from time to time.

Hello Ino31,

With the information you provided, your question can be answered much more clearly. For pots and pans, as mentioned before, it is really practical to choose a drawer with full extension slides, as this allows you to easily access the items. For a depth of 60 cm (24 inches), IKEA offers suitable drawer inserts that make full use of the depth. Especially for baking pans and storage containers, you can benefit from various layered inserts, such as wire or wooden ones, which can be stacked to better utilize vertical space.

Small kitchen utensils can be well organized with cutlery trays and organizer inserts. I also recommend dividers made of durable plastic that can be installed at different heights. This helps keep spice jars or measuring cups orderly.

There are even special spice racks that you can mount inside the cabinet doors—this way, you can make use of otherwise unused space.

Since you are looking for flexible solutions: keep in mind that many organizers are modular, so you can rearrange them as needed. Boxes with handle cutouts are also helpful for easily pulling out items stored deep inside.

If you like, I can also put together a list of specific insert products for you.
