Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to improve my kitchen lighting using the IKEA Metod LED system and have a few questions. Specifically, I am interested in how to arrange the LED strips to provide bright, shadow-free work surfaces while also creating pleasant, indirect lighting—without causing glare or negatively affecting the kitchen’s appearance.

What experiences do you have with the combination of white metal profiles and the different LED modules? I’m also curious about how well the dimming works and if there are any recommended control options compatible with the Metod system.

Are there any special tips regarding the positioning, cable management, or the combination of main lighting and accent lighting? I would greatly appreciate suggestions and practical advice!

Hello,

to achieve bright work surfaces, install LED strips directly under the upper cabinets. You can avoid shadows by directing the light as frontally as possible onto the workspace.

For dimming, use the IKEA TRÅDFRI system, which is compatible and easy to install. It is best to route the cables through the designated channels of the Metod profiles.

That's basically all you need.

Although this is common practice, I find the Metod system quite limiting in this regard. Why not experiment with flexible LED strips outside the standard profiles? People often feel restricted by the IKEA modules, but with a bit of tinkering and different dimmers, you can achieve much more—both functionally and aesthetically.

Also, I wonder if the white metal profile really appears neutral, or if the lighting often feels sterile and cold because of it. For cozy kitchen atmospheres, it’s better to be creative with warm white LEDs and softer lighting, rather than focusing solely on functionality.

I can confirm GALEO4’s point regarding the color temperature. The IKEA Metod LED systems are set to cool white by default, which provides a neutral light in the kitchen but doesn’t necessarily create a cozy atmosphere.

My recommendation:
- Use warm white LED modules for the main lighting in the work area.
- Combine this with dimmable drivers to adjust the brightness flexibly.
- The metal profiles should ensure wide light distribution to minimize shadows.

For control: Metod can be easily dimmed everywhere with TRÅDFRI. For more advanced scenarios, Zigbee-compatible systems offer more options – though with somewhat more installation effort. The cables are best routed neatly and hidden within the profiles for order and safety.

Do you have a preferred color temperature or specific requirements regarding brightness?

Hey, this is how I did it: The white metal profiles actually reflect the light nicely, making the room feel bigger and brighter – especially when you install them near the top of the wall, you can create a great atmosphere with indirect lighting.

My tips:
- A mix of direct and indirect lighting is invaluable.
- Install a dimmer – it makes the kitchen a cozy place in the evening.
- Use different LEDs in warm white and neutral white to stay flexible for everyday use.

If you route the cables in the back panel of the cabinets, everything stays easily accessible and looks really clean.

So, get your screwdriver ready, because with Metod it becomes both cozy and functional at the same time.
