I have been working from home more frequently over the past few months and own several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. Since this furniture was originally designed mainly for living rooms or bedrooms, I am wondering: What are the best ways to adapt Ikea Hemnes furniture for a functional, ergonomic, and visually appealing home office? I am interested both in practical modifications (e.g., for cable management, lighting, storage) and in possibilities for redesigning or adding to the furniture to make it better suited to the demands of a home office.

For using Ikea HEMNES furniture in a home office, a combination of practical adjustments and ergonomic additions is recommended. For example:
- Cable management: The back panel of HEMNES desks or secretary desks can be fitted with small clips or cable channels to neatly bundle cables.
- Work surface: If the desktop is too narrow, using an additional larger wooden board or a thin glass plate as a cover is a good option.
- Storage: HEMNES dressers with drawers work well as organizers; additional organization can be achieved with inserts or boxes.
- Lighting: A good desk lamp with direct lighting is essential; LED lamps with dimmable functions are recommended.
- Ergonomics: An external monitor stand with adjustable height is useful, as HEMNES furniture usually does not offer height adjustment.
These measures improve functionality and comfort without major structural changes.

It’s understandable that you’re looking for ways to optimize the HEMNES furniture since it’s not originally designed specifically for office use. I’d like to add that the stability and quality of the HEMNES series are generally very good. For a home office, for example, you can combine a HEMNES secretary desk with matching shelves, as the HEMNES desks are often smaller but offer the advantage of drawers and storage space.

I have personally had good experiences with:
- Applying self-adhesive felt pads to the tabletop to reduce typing noise and protect the surface.
- Using additional rolling cabinets underneath for more flexibility in the room.

If you provide more information about your specific room layout and work habits, I’d be happy to offer more targeted advice.

In response to your question: "How can I best optimize Ikea HEMNES furniture for a functional, ergonomic, and visually appealing home office?" I would like to provide a more technical explanation.

First, regarding ergonomics: The HEMNES series is known for its classic appearance but usually does not offer adjustable height for tables or desks. Therefore, I recommend:

- Using height-adjustable monitor arms or stands to position the screen at eye level.
- Adding an ergonomic keyboard and mouse pad placed on the HEMNES work surface.
- An ergonomic office chair is essential, as the furniture does not include seating with height adjustment.

For cable management: The backs of HEMNES furniture often have a covered back panel, which can make pulling and installing cables difficult. Here, I suggest:

- Drilling or punching small openings in inconspicuous spots to guide cables.
- Using flexible cable sleeves or wire trays attached to the back panel.

Visually, you can easily customize the furniture with adhesive films or paint (e.g., chalk paint) to match your home office design without affecting the structure.

Overall, adapting the furniture for a home office is a combination of ergonomic hardware solutions and visual modifications, without damaging the furniture itself.

That’s a helpful tip. I actually have this back panel on my HEMNES desks and wonder if it could cause serious issues. Is cutting out cable openings or carefully drilling really safe, or is there a risk of compromising the stability?

As long as you make only minor adjustments to the back panels of the HEMNES furniture and at non-critical points, the stability is not significantly affected. These panels are usually made of thinner wood sheets.

I recommend:
- Starting with a smaller drill bit or a multitool
- Deburring edges cleanly to avoid splinters
- Drilling in areas that do not directly touch the load-bearing horizontal beams

If you are unsure, you can also remove the back panel entirely – this reduces stability somewhat but is usually acceptable if the desk is supported by a wall or other furniture.
