Hello everyone, I am currently trying to plan my Ikea Pax wardrobe to work optimally for multiple people. There are three of us sharing an apartment, and we want to use the wardrobe together, with each person having their own well-organized section. My question is for those who have experience with this: How can I choose and arrange the interior fittings (shelves, drawers, hanging rails, baskets, etc.) to use the space efficiently while still allowing everyone easy access to their belongings? Are there any proven solutions or tips that make daily use easier, especially when accommodating different needs and types of clothing in a limited space? I look forward to your advice and suggestions!

Basically, you should divide the wardrobe into vertical sections for each person. This way, everyone has their own area with a combination of hanging space and shelves suited to their specific wardrobe. It’s important to adjust the height of the clothing rails: for example, a single, higher rail is enough for jackets or shirts, while a double rail setup makes sense for shorter items like t-shirts to save space.

Drawers are ideal for smaller items like underwear and accessories, while baskets can be used for everyday clothes or sportswear. When organizing, make sure frequently used items are easy to reach. It’s advisable to configure the interior fittings as flexibly as possible—many systems allow you to easily reposition and rearrange shelves.

Additionally, labeling or color-coding the wardrobe can help avoid confusion. This keeps the system clear and allows everyone to quickly find what they need.

I can only agree with that. I know how stressful it can get when you’re rushing in the morning and then have to tidy up in between. If you have different daily routines, it makes sense to also consider how you arrange access. Maybe everyone could have their own “quick access area” with the most important items they need daily.

I also find it helpful to clearly agree within the household who is responsible for which area to avoid conflicts. I have found that using small boxes or organizers works well to keep things tidy, especially for accessories or shoes.

It takes a bit of effort at the start, but it pays off for harmony and a quick overview.

I would like to add to the question and take a critical look at it: Is it really practical to share an Ikea Pax wardrobe among several people when space is limited? Of course, you can divide areas, but this often leads to compromises that are not ideal for anyone.

If you still want to use the system together, I recommend carefully analyzing the quantity of clothing and accessories per person in advance. This largely determines the number of shelves, hanging rods, etc., that you will need.

You should also keep in mind that, especially with different body heights and clothing lengths, individual adjustments are important. Even division can lead to wasted space if, for example, someone only needs a small area for pants and a larger one for tops.

My advice: Plan carefully, create a list or a simple chart of clothing types and habits to tailor the interior exactly. This is the only way to make the closet functional and avoid redundant space.

Have you already tried or done this? What experiences have you had with detailed planning?

This is a very good addition. Additionally, I recommend incorporating different storage methods during the planning phase:

- For short-term storage (e.g., worn clothes that don’t need washing), baskets or open shelf surfaces that are easily accessible work well.
- Deeper drawers with dividers are ideal for underwear and socks, helping to reduce clutter.
- Extra hanging fixtures or pull-out clothing rods for belts or scarves create clear organization.

If access to certain areas is tight, sliding doors are helpful since they don’t require space in front of the wardrobe. This should also be taken into account when planning the room.

Coordinating who uses which type of clothing most often can significantly improve wardrobe organization.

Basically, it depends on the size of the wardrobe and the needs of the users. There are indeed very compact and well-thought-out solutions if the interior fittings are designed to be flexible. To improve functionality, Paulte should consider the following:

- Modular design: Pax offers variable widths (50cm (20 inches), 75cm (30 inches), etc.); you can also combine multiple modules side by side to create clearly defined sections.
- Accessories: Invest in different organizers, such as separate shelves, pull-out clothes rails, and inner drawers with dividers.
- Ergonomics: The height of each element is important—those items used daily should be placed between eye level and hip height.

Efficiency also comes from positioning frequently used items at the front and less-used ones towards the back. Promoting a “systematic storage” approach makes sense. Usage agreements gain a physical basis within the wardrobe.

Therefore, shared use is definitely doable with careful planning and clear communication of each user’s needs.
