ᐅ How can I securely attach Ikea Besta units to a drywall (gypsum board) wall?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning to mount an Ikea Besta shelving unit on a drywall and am unsure about the best and safest way to do this. The wall is only double-layered with gypsum boards, and there is no supporting wooden or metal framework behind the areas where I want to hang the shelf.

Since Ikea often only provides standard instructions for solid walls, I would like to know which fasteners are truly suitable for drywall in this case. How can I ensure that the Besta shelf, with its shelves and weight, will hold reliably over time without sagging or even falling down?

I have considered special cavity anchors and possibly metal toggle bolts – does anyone have experience with the combination of drywall and Besta? What are the best anchors or techniques, and do I possibly need to add extra reinforcements to the wall? I appreciate any detailed recommendations!

One more tip: Check if you can hang the Besta elements on a drywall (plasterboard) without causing damage. Sometimes the effort isn’t worth it, as more stable solutions like a sideboard are more practical. However, if you want to keep the items on the wall, maximize the number of metal anchors and distribute the weight evenly.

I can clearly understand how important secure mounting is – I myself had concerns about drywall and Ikea shelves. What ultimately helped me was, in addition to the cavity anchors, attaching a wooden batten behind the drywall by slightly opening the wall and fixing the batten to the masonry with heavy-duty anchors. Then I screwed the Besta unit onto that.

Although this required some extra work, the safety and peace of mind that nothing will fall is definitely worth it. The load is better distributed, and the wall shows no unsightly marks.

TL;DR: If you want to be absolutely sure, you should use a wooden substructure when cavity anchors alone are not sufficient.

Exactly! Sometimes you just have to invest a bit of time to avoid waking up to a fallen shelf later. And if it’s even a bit fun, like tinkering with the solution, that’s perfect. Then the display not only looks good, but you also learn something. 😊
