Hello everyone, I am currently planning to mount an Ikea Besta shelving unit on a drywall and am unsure about the best and safest way to do this. The wall is only double-layered with gypsum boards, and there is no supporting wooden or metal framework behind the areas where I want to hang the shelf.

Since Ikea often only provides standard instructions for solid walls, I would like to know which fasteners are truly suitable for drywall in this case. How can I ensure that the Besta shelf, with its shelves and weight, will hold reliably over time without sagging or even falling down?

I have considered special cavity anchors and possibly metal toggle bolts – does anyone have experience with the combination of drywall and Besta? What are the best anchors or techniques, and do I possibly need to add extra reinforcements to the wall? I appreciate any detailed recommendations!

It is best to use special hollow wall metal anchors (toggle bolts). They distribute the load well across the drywall. Make sure to use enough anchors – at least two per shelf bracket.

Of course, toggle anchors are a popular choice, but let’s be honest: why rely on a load-bearing function from a piece of furniture mounted only on drywall, which is nothing more than a thin surface layer? Shelving units like those from Ikea are designed for load-bearing walls. Relying solely on anchors is risky and could cause damage if the shelf is ever loaded more heavily.

A truly durable solution is to install an additional substructure in advance — for example, a wooden batten behind the drywall — to properly anchor the shelf. All other approaches are more or less compromises.

Thank you for this helpful idea! Is there a practical way to add such a subframe afterwards, without completely removing the drywall panels? I would prefer not to open up the entire wall area. Perhaps small openings would be enough to insert wooden battens? And how would the mounting of the Besta shelf work then? Would I need regular anchors for solid walls, or would something like universal anchors be sufficient?

Retrofitting the drywall is technically possible but quite complex. If you want to attach wooden battens behind the wall, access is usually required, which means small openings or possibly a partial opening in the wall. Installing so-called backing plates (wooden panels) works best before plastering or before the wall is assembled.

For fastening directly to the drywall itself, the following recommendations apply:

- Use tested metal toggle bolts (e.g., Molly bolts) with sufficient load capacity
- Calculate the load including a safety margin, at least 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) per bolt
- Use multiple bolts to distribute the load
- If possible, mount the shelf so that the load is distributed across several points on the wall

A combination of reinforcement and high-quality hollow wall anchors is often the best compromise for stability.

That is correct, Molly bolts are a reliable choice when there is no substructure. It is important that the anchors are installed properly and the drill holes are precisely sized.
