Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of securely mounting my Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a very strong drywall. The wall is generally stable and about 12.5 mm (0.5 inches) thick, but because it is a drywall construction, there is naturally some uncertainty about load-bearing capacity. I want to avoid the cabinets falling down after a while or the fastenings becoming loose.

Are there specific anchors or fastening techniques that have proven effective with strong drywall, especially for the weight and load that Metod wall cabinets carry?

It is important to me that the solution ensures safety while not unnecessarily damaging the wall. If anyone has personal experience with such constructions or perhaps alternatives like built-in wooden battens or reinforcements, I would appreciate any tips and detailed advice. Thank you in advance!

I understand how you feel – I’ve been there with that uncertainty! My advice is to definitely use heavy-duty anchors designed specifically for drywall. Regular plastic anchors usually aren’t sufficient, especially for heavier loads.

What helped me was also checking whether there is a sturdy substructure behind the drywall. If not, I would consider attaching the cabinets additionally to a wooden battens fixed to the wall studs. This provides a good sense of security, especially if you want to ensure nothing wiggles or cracks later on.

Sometimes it also helps to distribute the load well and use at least two to three mounting points per cabinet. If you like, I can share the names of manufacturers where I had good experiences with heavy-duty anchors.

For strong drywall, I recommend metal toggle bolts or spring toggle anchors. These spread out behind the drywall panel and hold the load securely. Metod cabinets are heavy, so use at least 3 anchors per cabinet. If possible, place the anchors into the wooden studs, which are usually hidden behind the drywall.

Here is the crucial point. Those who rely on drywall without a solid anchoring often overestimate its load-bearing capacity. Unless you drill exactly into the wall studs, it is almost a gamble.

On top of that, the Metod series is not exactly lightweight – a real stress test for any drywall. A few fancy anchors and some hope, in my opinion, are not enough.

I would rather recommend mounting a sturdy wooden batten or metal profile in front of the drywall. Hanging the cabinets on that minimizes the risk of an expensive fall.

But honestly: many underestimate the effort involved here, especially when it comes to long-term safety.

To ensure a safe and long-lasting installation, the following approach is recommended:

- Use a reliable stud finder to locate the metal or wooden studs behind the drywall.
- Attach a continuous wooden batten (at least 40 x 60 mm (1.6 x 2.4 inches)) horizontally across the studs to distribute the load over a larger area.
- Use heavy-duty anchors in the remaining areas where there are no battens.
- Mount the Metod wall cabinets only on these secured points.

This method combines optimal stability with minimal effort and ensures that both the cabinets and the wall remain durable over time.

In my experience, black metal toggle bolts size M8 or larger are always a good choice. It is also advisable to check the manufacturer’s specifications regarding the load capacity of the anchors.

Overall, you should not rely solely on individual anchors but plan the mounting points so that the load of the wall cabinets is evenly distributed.
