Pinken44Hello everyone,
I am looking for effective ways to better utilize and possibly modify the IKEA Brimnes drawers. Specifically, my goal is to maximize storage capacity and improve the functionality of the drawers for everyday items. The BRIMNES series is known for its simple design and solid construction, but I feel that clever adjustments can make these drawers even more useful.
I have already considered whether adding extra dividers, drawer inserts, or changing the drawer fronts could help achieve better organization and usability. Perhaps there are also options to upgrade the drawer slides or retrofit soft-close mechanisms?
Do any of you have concrete experience or practical tips on modifying BRIMNES drawers to optimize storage space and improve ease of use? Which tools and materials do you recommend, and where should one be cautious with changes to avoid compromising stability?
I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Hello Pinken44,
Regarding your question: "Does anyone have concrete experience or practical tips on how to modify the BRIMNES drawers to optimize storage space and improve usability?"
From my experience, installing custom-made dividers is one of the most effective modifications. For example, you can cut thin plywood strips and secure them with small brackets or construction adhesive. This way, you create separate compartments for smaller items that would otherwise be loose.
Also, with BRIMNES drawers, it’s important to ensure the maximum load capacity of the drawer slides is not exceeded, as this could affect the smooth operation and extension of the drawers.
About soft-close features: Some BRIMNES models already come with built-in dampers, but if not, external soft-close hinges or dampers can be retrofitted. However, you should pay close attention to compatibility, as the drawer slides are quite shallow.
For tools, I recommend a fine handsaw or router for precise cutting of the inserts, a drill for fastening, and possibly spray adhesive for anti-slip mats on the drawer bottom to prevent materials from sliding around.
Good luck with your modification!

From my experience, installing custom-made dividers is one of the most effective modifications. Exactly! And I would add: it doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes just putting a few boxes or baskets inside is enough to organize the drawer and make it more flexible.
I filled my BRIMNES drawers with colored storage boxes—it not only makes everything easier to overview but also a bit more cheerful in daily use 😉.
Another tip: add interior lighting. It might sound funny, but it works really well, especially in dark rooms. Small LED strips are easy to install, use very little power, and bring light into the darkness when you need to find something quickly.
Oh, and to prevent rattling, I like to stick self-adhesive felt pads to the sides or under the inserts—that way everything stays quiet.
Overall: have fun, don’t overcomplicate things, and try out what works best for your needs!

Does anyone have practical experience or tips on how to modify the BRIMNES drawers to maximize storage space and improve ease of use?To optimize the storage space and usability of the BRIMNES drawers, it is helpful to first assess your specific usage situation. There are several effective approaches:
- Installing custom drawer inserts made of wood or plastic to divide and organize contents
- Using non-slip mats on the drawer base to prevent items from shifting
- Enhancing the drawer slides by replacing or upgrading to higher-quality runners, if feasible
- Adding ergonomic handles or recessed grips for better grip comfort
I also recommend paying close attention to the original specifications before making any structural modifications, especially on load-bearing components, since the BRIMNES systems often have limited weight capacities. Reinforcing the side panels or drawer bottom might be considered for increased loads, but this should be done carefully and precisely.
Regarding retrofitting soft-close mechanisms, it is technically possible but not always straightforward. The existing drawer slide system must be compatible, and installation requires appropriate craftsmanship.
In summary: Custom inserts and improving ease of use provide the greatest benefit with manageable effort.
