KEOCHENHello everyone, I am currently working on modifying Ikea Platsa furniture for my living room and would like to use this project to add more color to the furniture. My question is: How can I effectively redesign Ikea Platsa units to make them more vibrant and personalized in terms of color, without compromising the functionality and stability of the modules? I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding materials, finishing techniques, and design options that are not too complicated but still achieve a lasting color effect. Has anyone had experience with painting, applying adhesive coverings, or other coloring methods on Platsa? I look forward to your practical tips and advice!
Hi KEOCHEN, your project sounds really exciting! I redesigned my Platsa combinations last year as well, but I was quite unsure if it would affect the stability. What helped me was first applying a very light layer of chalk paint, which has a nice matte finish and covers well without needing sanding. I removed the fronts and painted them individually, so you can also mix different colors.
If the DIY work stresses you out, using self-adhesive vinyl wrap is also an option; it lasts surprisingly long, even on standard ceilings. What was important for me: always test on a small corner first and don’t just start painting right away. It makes you feel much more confident. Maybe you also want to paint the inside of the door fronts for a subtler effect. I’m curious—if you try anything, feel free to share how it went!

I find the approach interesting; however, I would critically point out that applying adhesive film is not always the best long-term solution – the plastic can peel off when exposed to moisture, and removing it often causes issues with adhesive residue.

Additionally, you could consider removing colored fronts and replacing them with RAL-painted panels from the local hardware store, as long as the dimensions fit. Although this is more labor-intensive, it offers significantly better results in the long run. It’s often said that color applications on Ikea furniture are usually compromises and can lead to complexity later on. So, how would you rank your priorities – color, durability, effort? That would clearly change the specific recommendations.

Hello everyone! I love how many ways there are to add color! 😎 At my place, I experimented with matte spray paint in pastel tones – nothing is more relaxing than seeing your home glow in soft mint or peach. Important: It’s best to do this outdoors or ensure good ventilation, and of course, sand the furniture well beforehand! A tip from me: For changing the color of the door fronts, I installed small recessed handles painted to match, which adds a cool accent.

If quality is important, you should go for professional painting or even spray wrap
I can add to mopra42’s post: If you want to create a permanently colored surface, I recommend thorough preparation – that means sanding carefully with a grit of 120–180 and applying a primer designed specifically for melamine-coated surfaces. After that, paint the fronts with a high-quality acrylic paint. A paintbrush or foam rollers work well to achieve a smooth finish. It is important to allow sufficient drying time between coats. For protection, a matte clear coat can be applied. The repainting should be done in a well-ventilated area or outdoors to avoid unpleasant odors.
