Hello everyone,

I am currently focusing more on my Ikea Platsa series, especially with the goal of making better use of the available storage space. Often the standard compartments and shelves are functional, but there is still potential to create more order or increase capacity within the modules. My question is therefore: How can I modify Ikea PLATSA for better storage utilization without undertaking extensive conversions? Do you have any experience or ideas, for example regarding shelves, internal drawers, or the use of vertical space? What has proven effective for you to maximize the available space? I am particularly interested in practical solutions for everyday use rather than expensive custom-made options.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi gomarcel!

Your question about modifying the Ikea PLATSA to improve storage space is really interesting – there’s a lot you can do without having to do too much construction. 👌

I added several extra shelves at different levels that you can easily customize yourself. Often overlooked: removing the back panel or at least taking out parts of it to attach shelves or hooks on the back side of the modules. This way, you can effectively use the space from both sides. Also, small baskets or boxes inside help keep things organized and make stacking items easier.

A quick tip from me: integrate cable pass-throughs if you have electronics inside the cabinet. This makes the area tidier and more usable.

And yes, sometimes it’s worth investing in internal drawers if needed – the Ikea ones fit PLATSA well and improve visibility and access, especially in deeper compartments.

Good luck with your modifications, it’s definitely a cool project! 😎

Hello gomarcel,

regarding your question about how to modify IKEA PLATSA for better storage use, I would like to add a few basics, as often the best solution lies in a combination of simple adjustments.

- Firstly, additional shelves are extremely helpful since the standard dimensions often leave a lot of unused height. IKEA offers suitable wall brackets for extra shelves that can be installed space-efficiently.

- Pull-out drawers inside are actually very practical – they turn deep compartments into easily accessible storage and prevent stacking items on top of each other, which can quickly become confusing.

- Vertical use: One option is to insert dividers or shelf organizers to make better use of the height, for example for file folders or special boxes.

- For seasonal items or things used infrequently, storage boxes that can be easily labeled and stacked are recommended.

- For the doors, you can also work with magnetic strips or small hooks inside to store utensils in a space-saving way.

If you like, I can also send you a list of compatible IKEA accessories that work well with PLATSA.

I hope this helps you!

That is certainly a sensible approach, but it is equally important to consider under which circumstances a modification actually leads to better storage utilization and when it might have the opposite effect. Especially with PLATSA modules, the depth can sometimes be limited – in these cases, dividing the space too much into small compartments can make it less flexible.

Therefore, you should always think about the type of items being stored and possibly adapt different modules accordingly. Additionally, consider whether removing the back panel or making major alterations could compromise the stability of the structure.

Another point to consider: Are there modular solutions or third-party accessories that are compatible and could reduce the effort? Personally, before making modifications, I would also evaluate whether a complete reorganization using various module types might be more effective than multiple individual alterations.

What do you think? Sometimes less is more, isn’t it?

Absolutely! I find that PLATSA is very flexible and actually really inspiring to customize. You can get truly creative once you start combining boxes, baskets, and other components. For example, I used flexible plastic inserts that are easy to slide in and out. This way, you stay organized and still have everything visible at a glance!

Even though some say you should consider stability: I tightened some screws in a few spots and added a few extra battens to reinforce the whole structure – this works great and gives you the freedom to remove the back panel for more storage space or minor modifications.

My biggest tip is not to be afraid to try different storage options and keep rearranging the modules until it really fits. Every plan just needs a little testing phase. So: get started, it’s worth it! 🙂
