ᐅ How can I modify Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to increase storage space?

UfukfiHello everyone,
I am currently planning a new kitchen with Ikea Metod and want to modify the standard cabinets to maximize storage space. Specifically, I am looking for ways to alter or enhance the Metod cabinets, especially the base cabinets and tall cabinets, so that the available space is used more efficiently than with the standard shelves and internal dividers.
I am thinking, for example, about adding extra shelves, special drawer solutions, using pull-outs, custom-made inserts, or clever use of the side panels for storage.
It is also important for me to be aware of potential issues with these modifications—such as maximum load capacity or compatibility with the Ikea systems.
Does anyone have practical experience or tips on how to redesign the Ikea Metod kitchen furniture for increased storage that go beyond the usual adjustments? I look forward to ideas and shared experiences!

Hi,
I would recommend adding internal drawer pulls to make much better use of the space inside. Additionally, pull-outs for spices or knives on the inner sides of the doors are a good option.
You can also use adjustable shelf supports in tall cabinets to customize the shelf spacing.

Hello Ufukfi,
Your question about optimizing storage in Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets is very well formulated and important for effective kitchen design. To provide targeted advice, I would like to explain some technical details that should be considered when making modifications.
1. Adjustable Shelf Supports: Metod cabinets use standardized shelves fixed with plastic shelf supports. You can switch to metal shelf supports, which are more stable and flexible – allowing shelves to be installed at smaller height increments for better space organization.
2. Depth Utilization: Base cabinets typically have a depth of 60 cm (24 inches), but the back area is often underused due to installations (wiring/piping). To maximize storage, you can use a recessed back panel shelf or install specialized inner drawers that can be pulled out almost entirely.
3. Interior Dividers: Ikea offers so-called inner drawers mounted on the underside of the cabinet carcass, providing better access than fixed shelves. Alternatively, you can install custom divider inserts made of wood or plastic to organize storage thematically and minimize unused spaces.
4. Load Distribution: Keep in mind the maximum load capacity of shelves (typically around 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs)), especially if you plan to store heavy items (pots, pans). It may be beneficial to replace fixed shelves with metal frames to better distribute the load.
Do you already have an idea of what items you want to store? This helps in selecting the right solutions and determining whether you need tall pull-outs or rather shallow shelves.

That helps in choosing the right solutions and seeing whether you need tall pull-outs or rather shallow shelves, for example.Thank you for the detailed answer. I mainly need more space for smaller kitchen utensils, spices, and storage containers, but also for larger pots and pans. I want to keep the shelf heights as flexible as possible because the height of the pots varies a lot.
I’m also wondering if it makes sense to replace the inner drawers of a tall cabinet with custom-made wooden inserts that better suit my needs. Are there any limitations with Metod regarding the opening mechanism or installation options?
In addition, I’m interested in how to make good use of the side panels – for example, for narrow shelves or hooks for kitchen tools. Are there any clever solutions that can be integrated without major modifications?

for flexible use of the shelf height, I recommend paying attention to Ikea’s own 37 mm (1.5 inch) grid system: the rows of holes in the side panels allow for shelves to be placed at close intervals. This lets you precisely adjust the height with any shelf support.
Regarding your ideas about wooden inserts in inner drawers: the Metod inner drawers operate with a special sliding and opening mechanism, so you need to ensure that any custom build does not interfere with the runners and closing function. In practice, many good solutions use ready-made drawer units as a basic structure, into which you place custom-made inserts.
I have often seen the use of side panels solved for clients with narrow magnetic strips or slim hook rails, which are attached with screws or strong adhesive. These can usually be installed afterward without weakening the cabinet frame.
Important: If you go beyond the standard dimensions, always check the load limits. Excessive weight can cause shelves to bend or hinges to be damaged.

For my kitchen, I also made custom inserts for Metod drawers – simply cut plywood panels precisely and fitted them with strips as dividers. This way, you can perfectly customize the interior!
Here’s another tip: see if you can install small extra shelves or sliding drawers under the upper cabinets – I use those for spices and small items, which saves space on the countertop.
Enjoy your renovation! It’s truly worth it once you’ve optimized the storage space smartly.
