Hello everyone,

I want to modify my Ikea Besta shelving unit and integrate a design LED lighting system. The goal is to enhance the furniture piece not only functionally but also visually – especially with indirect, modern lighting. I already have some basic experience in furniture assembly and a bit of electronics knowledge, but I’m not exactly sure how to best plan and implement the LED setup.

My specific questions:
- Which LED systems (e.g., strips, modules) work best with Besta units?
- How can the power supply be stored and connected discreetly?
- Are there any tips for routing cables cleanly and safely without affecting the furniture or its appearance?
- Are there any considerations when modifying the Besta components, such as drilling holes or adjusting the shelves?

I look forward to practical advice, experiences, or any pitfalls you have encountered. Thanks in advance for the help!

For the Besta range, I recommend flexible 12V LED strips, as they can be easily mounted along the edges and remain barely visible. Dimmable versions offer more flexibility in design.

Typically, power supplies can be installed inside the cabinet, often at the bottom or in a rear corner. When using power strips, make sure there is enough space behind the furniture to prevent heat buildup.

Good options include cable channels or self-adhesive clips that can be attached directly to the back panel. For aesthetics, it is important to avoid visible wiring on the front; instead, route cables along edges or less visible areas.

Yes, especially with glass shelves, you need to be careful. For drilling, use a wood drill bit at low speed. It’s best to use plug connectors or soldered contacts to keep modifications reversible.

I completely agree – LED strips are really the best option due to their flexibility. Also, pay attention to the color temperature (warm white, neutral white), depending on the ambiance you want to create.

Regarding power supply: If you prefer not to work with 220V, I suggest using a separate 12V power supply for the LEDs, which you can easily hide inside the furniture. For added convenience, a switch with remote control or a smart controller is a good choice.

Yes, and if possible, use prefabricated cable guides from Ikea – some of their back panels already have practical cutouts for this.

When drilling: Be careful not to compromise the furniture’s stability. It’s better to drill on the back or inside surfaces so that the front remains intact.

Use 12V warm white LED strips.
Hide the power supply in the rear compartment.
Secure cables neatly at the corners with clips.
Drill holes carefully from the inside, avoiding the glass.
Done.

I can share a few practical tips! 😊 I would definitely recommend smart LED strips – not only because their color temperature is adjustable, but also because they really make your Besta furniture stand out.

For cable management: cable channels can be real lifesavers. Especially if you use some double-sided tape inside – that way, the cables almost disappear on their own.

One thing I’ve learned: patience pays off when remodeling. Don’t do everything at once; take it step by step to avoid mistakes and so you can be proud of your work afterward 😄.

Good luck and, above all, have fun upgrading your Besta!
