Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to make our new Ikea Metod kitchen as child-friendly as possible and have some questions about the planning and installation. Specifically, I am interested in which measures and installation techniques you would recommend to ensure both safety and ease of use for small children without compromising the kitchen’s functionality. This includes, for example, childproof locks, choice of materials, mounting heights, or optimal storage space that children can or cannot reach. Are there any particular recommendations for the Metod kitchen units based on your experience or known solutions? Thank you in advance for your advice and tips!

Additional notes on safety and usability:

- A countertop made of high-quality composite material is more resistant to scratches and heat than standard particleboard.
- Using base cabinets with pull-out systems improves visibility for children and also helps prevent small items from getting lost.
- For the Metod kitchen systems, there are modular inserts (e.g., cutlery trays) designed specifically for easy cleaning and safety considerations.

Safety and hygiene are equally important here. A simple, clear layout makes handling easier not only for children but also for adults.

Hi Tillmannpi, your question is very important, and I’m really glad you asked! Child-friendly kitchens are the foundation for a safe home.

I have advised several families with Metod kitchens and highly recommend:
- Childproof locks on all lower cabinets.
- Choosing a countertop height so that children cannot reach spices or knives without assistance.
- Rubber bumpers on corners for impact protection!
- Small children should have their own, low-level cabinets where they can help out in a playful way.

It’s so rewarding when children learn early on to use the kitchen safely and independently. Don’t be discouraged by the initial extra effort – it’s worth it!

Thank you all for the very insightful responses!

I find the suggestions about removable child safety locks and the advice on height and layout particularly interesting. Rebufar's comment about parenting makes sense, but a combination of precaution and clear rules seems reasonable.

I will probably plan the countertops a bit higher and add protective strips on the corners. I also really like the idea of push-to-open fronts, which helps prevent injuries from handle edges.

Does anyone have a recommendation for specific child safety locks for Metod cabinets, preferably ones that are durable and easy to install? I want to avoid causing permanent damage to the doors or frames.
