Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to make our new Ikea Metod kitchen as child-friendly as possible and have some questions about the planning and installation. Specifically, I am interested in which measures and installation techniques you would recommend to ensure both safety and ease of use for small children without compromising the kitchen’s functionality. This includes, for example, childproof locks, choice of materials, mounting heights, or optimal storage space that children can or cannot reach. Are there any particular recommendations for the Metod kitchen units based on your experience or known solutions? Thank you in advance for your advice and tips!

Hello Tillmannpi,

you’ve raised a very important question, as kitchens with children require several adjustments. Here is my structured approach to making Metod kitchen cabinets child-safe and practical:

- Secure locks: Use special child safety locks designed for Metod cabinet doors, such as magnetic child safety locks. These are sturdy and can be opened quickly when needed.
- Installation height: Plan countertops and wall cabinets a bit higher so children cannot easily access sensitive or dangerous areas. At the same time, lower cabinets should be lockable or secured to prevent injury risks.
- Impact and scratch protection: Plastic or soft rubber edge protectors on corners can help prevent injuries.
- Furniture layout: Use drawers with removable dividers, allowing children access only to safe areas and reducing mess.
- Choice of materials: Metod offers various fronts; I would recommend a matte surface, which is more resistant to fingerprints and scratches.

A common mistake is skipping load tests for drawer slides—since children will reach inside, all opening mechanisms must be strong and durable!

In short: child safety locks, proper height, edge protectors, and thoughtfully planned storage are key.

If you like, I can also recommend some specific products that have proven reliable.

Basically, I recommend:
- Equipping the lower cabinet row with drawer slides that are preferably self-closing to prevent fingers from getting caught.
- Fitting all cabinet doors with child safety locks that are easy to operate but inaccessible to young children.
- Using rounded edge protection profiles on corners.

Regarding mounting height:
The countertop should generally be installed 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) higher than usual to minimize children’s access to the stove or other appliances.

Conclusion:
Safety is clearly the main focus. The Ikea Metod system components are modular and allow for many adjustments, which is an advantage. However, it is essential to choose safe hinges and drawer systems, as cheap versions tend to wear out quickly and reduce safety.

Child safety locks on all cabinet doors are mandatory.
Raise the stove or use a stove guard.
Soft-close drawers help prevent finger pinching.
Keep storage spaces within children’s reach low and well-organized.

Hello Tillmannpi,

I am happy to add a few practical tips to teyosef’s post:

- Use sturdy shelves for the Metod cabinets, as young children often put a lot of weight on the shelves when opening or loading them.
- For the handles: it’s better to choose small, rounded handles or handleless fronts with a push-to-open function to avoid injuries.
- For the countertop, I recommend a surface with high abrasion resistance, since children can easily cause scratches.
- Use a step stool adapted to the kitchen so children can safely help at the countertop or learn without needing to climb.

It is also important to ensure that power outlets are well secured and that there are no loose cables hanging around. Overall, you should design the kitchen so that the main hazards are prevented or secured early on.

To be honest – how child-friendly do you really want it to be? Most child safety locks are just annoying DIY hassle that don’t last in the long run. It’s better to design the room layout so that children don’t easily bump their heads on cabinets and to designate safe areas for them.

Don’t underestimate how quickly kids become lock-picking experts! Those devices usually only last a few months.

In my opinion, it’s better to focus on education and redesign rather than relying heavily on mechanical safety devices.
