Good morning everyone, I am currently looking into the best ways to care for the wooden surfaces of my IKEA Platsa furniture without damaging their often sensitive finish. Specifically, I am interested in sustainable and effective cleaning methods suitable for both untreated and coated wood surfaces. Since PLATSA components are usually made of veneered or melamine-coated wood, it is important to me which cleaning products are recommended based on your experience, as well as which tools and care tips should definitely be followed to keep the furniture looking good for a long time. Are there particular care oils, waxes, or cloths that work well for this? How often should maintenance be done, and what should definitely be avoided? I look forward to knowledgeable and practical advice!

Great question, Sarfrancis! 😊 I have a PLATSA chest of drawers myself and can only recommend wiping the surface regularly with a microfiber or cotton cloth. It’s best to use only lukewarm water for this! Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges, as they can damage the coating. For occasional care, I use a special furniture care spray that protects the surface and gives it a slight shine. Tip: Never apply too much liquid at once, as it can penetrate the wood and cause swelling! Especially with PLATSA, the surfaces are durable but not indestructible. Keep it up, your furniture will thank you! 👌

Regarding the care of IKEA PLATSA wooden surfaces, I recommend the following steps: - Regularly dust with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth - Do not use alcohol, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface - For heavier dirt, a mild dish soap diluted in water can be used, followed by drying the surface - Do not use oils or waxes on melamine-coated surfaces, as they leave residues and can damage the coating. Since PLATSA furniture is mostly melamine-coated, gentle cleaning is sufficient. Cleaning about once a month combined with more frequent dusting is advisable.

I only use a damp microfiber cloth and avoid all chemical cleaning agents. This helps preserve the surface for a longer time.

In addition to the previous posts: If your PLATSA furniture surfaces are generally quite resistant—like melamine—gentle cleaning is usually sufficient. For real wood or veneered parts, you can use special wood care products that nourish and protect the wood. It is important to test the product on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not discolor or damage the surface. For everyday cleaning, water with a little mild detergent is enough, followed by thorough drying. Avoid moisture that remains on the wood for extended periods, as this can cause significant damage.

Aggressive cleaners or abrasive sponges are a no-go,

I often find this cautious approach to be exaggerated. In my opinion, you just have to rely on common sense. Of course, you shouldn’t use steel wool, but a slightly stronger cleaner once every quarter doesn’t do any harm—especially on heavily used furniture. The idea that every surface finish is indestructible is naive anyway. You should learn to handle the material yourself, rather than constantly panicking over small scratches.
