Hello everyone,

I am currently working on assembling the IKEA Platsa system and have encountered a challenge that seems very important for the stability and optimal use of the cabinet: maintaining the sweep depth.

My specific question is: How can I ensure that the sweep depth is correctly maintained when building Platsa? Are there any special techniques, tools, or assembly steps that help keep the correct distance to avoid mechanical issues, especially when placing multiple modules side by side?

I understand that with modular cabinet solutions, the correct spacing between the elements is essential to prevent doors and drawers from rubbing or connection profiles from warping. Could someone please describe the important steps, tips, or potential pitfalls in detail?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello oskar44,

Your question about the clearance depth during Platsa assembly is very precise and important for a good result. The clearance depth often defines the distance that individual modules must maintain to ensure, for example, doors close properly without mechanical friction.

My advice:
- First, take the exact measurements of the Platsa modules and consider tolerances in your planning, as slight manufacturing tolerances at IKEA are normal.
- When assembling, don’t rely solely on the holes in the drillings; use a ruler and angle to check whether the carcasses of adjacent elements are truly parallel and positioned at the intended distance.
- Especially when mounting the connecting profiles between modules, it’s important to align them before fully tightening the screws. Use clamps or temporary spacers to maintain the correct clearance depth.

Another important point: When hanging doors, check the adjustment and alignment of the hinges. IKEA offers adjustment options to align doors precisely and optimize overlaps and gaps.

On the technical side: If you know the exact depth for the contact surfaces, you can use a depth stop or wooden spacers to ensure that the distance is reproducible during assembly.

One more question for you: Are you planning to place several modules only side by side, or also stacked vertically? If stacked, you may need to consider vertical expansions and proper adjustment of the connecting screws.

Feel free to reach out if you need more details.

Simply use spacers between the modules during assembly. Before tightening the screws, check that the doors and drawers close smoothly without sticking.

I’ll quickly add to that: spacers and a good eye for detail are invaluable! When placing the Platsa modules side by side, make sure nothing is so tight that you risk hurting your fingers – furniture doesn’t like that any more than we do 😉

And if things don’t fit perfectly at first, stay calm and consider small adjustments to the hinges, as they can work wonders!

Exactly, that’s the main point, but I would add that the quality and material of the spacers make a difference. For example, precisely cut wooden strips provide a more accurate spacing than improvised cardboard pieces. Also, by temporarily clamping the modules together, you can ensure they don’t shift while working.

Absolutely! IKEA hinges are designed to be flexibly adjusted with small screws. Depth and lateral position can be finely tuned this way. This is especially helpful with Platsa units when minor misalignments in the door recess occur.

I also recommend assembling the modules roughly first, then attaching the doors and aligning them step by step. This way, you can better see how the surfaces actually interact.

I know the feeling when you want to be very precise about the clearance while assembling—it can be quite frustrating, especially if it’s your first time building Platsa.

What helped me was staying patient and taking short breaks when needed to maintain an overview. I also made sure to check the distances with a ruler while tightening the screws instead of relying solely on feel. Sometimes you only realize if everything fits correctly when the door is attached, and you might need to make some adjustments.

If you’re working with multiple units, having a second person to hold and align the modules really makes a difference—two pairs of eyes catch more, and it’s easier to keep the spacing accurate.

So: keep at it, the final result is worth it—I’m rooting for you!
