Hello everyone, I recently bought the Pax wardrobe from IKEA and overall I am satisfied. However, I am concerned about the metal parts, especially the rails and screws, which might rust over time. My question is: How can I keep the metal parts of the Pax rust-free, especially under normal indoor conditions where humidity levels can fluctuate? Are there any specific maintenance methods, oils, or protective products you would recommend? I would appreciate practical tips for preventing rust, ideally based on your own experience with the Pax system or similar furniture. Thanks in advance!

A method often underestimated for keeping metal parts rust-free over the long term is to prevent condensation. This is especially important in unheated rooms or basements, where moisture tends to collect on cold metal surfaces.

I therefore recommend storing the Pax and similar furniture in well-tempered, preferably climate-controlled rooms with stable conditions. Any sudden temperature change increases the risk of rust formation.

In addition, I have found that a very thin layer of carnauba wax, applied regularly, forms a durable protective film that also withstands mechanical stress.

Protection with oil or wax: Light lubricants like WD-40 or special furniture wax create a protective layer against rust.

I find the widely recommended WD-40 tip somewhat overrated. In my experience, it only provides short-term protection and can make surfaces sticky over time, which attracts dust—not exactly a desirable effect on furniture.

I think it makes more sense to make a proper investment and use high-quality rust protection paints or powder coatings instead of repeatedly applying lubricants. Of course, this is more labor-intensive and not always practical for DIY use.

Anyone who truly wants to eliminate rust long-term needs to protect the surface itself better than just with lubricants. For everyday use, however, the oil film is usually sufficient.
