Xhulio67Hello everyone,
I have several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces at home, especially cabinets and dressers, which I really like. However, I have noticed that water stains appear very quickly on the wood surfaces when a glass or plant is placed on them. I want to keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible and am therefore looking for effective methods to prevent water stains on the Ikea Hemnes surfaces without damaging or negatively affecting their appearance.
Can anyone share tips on how to best prevent or remove these water stains? Are there special care products or cleaners that work particularly well? Or maybe care routines I should follow to protect the natural wood surface? Any advice, including DIY solutions or home remedies, is welcome, as long as they do not harm the Hemnes finish.
Thank you in advance!

Hi Xhulio67,
I completely understand your frustration with water stains – they appear quite quickly on Hemnes, unfortunately! 😅 My little secret: always use a thin felt pad or small coasters. This is honestly the easiest way to protect the surface over time.
If water stains do occur, I’ve found that gently wiping with a slightly damp cloth and then drying immediately works well – otherwise, the stains tend to soak in quickly.
Here’s a cleaning tip: I like to use a mild dish soap and water mixture, nothing harsh that could damage the finish. After wiping, always dry thoroughly to keep the beautiful surface intact.
Removing water stains can sometimes require patience, but stay calm and it will work! 😉

Hello Xhulio67,
to effectively protect the surfaces of Ikea Hemnes furniture from water stains, I recommend the following steps:
- Always use coasters or felt pads under vessels and plant pots.
- Wipe surfaces immediately after contact with water using a soft, nearly dry cloth.
- To remove existing water stains, use a very mild dish soap diluted with water. Important: Do not use harsh cleaners or alcohol, as these can damage the finish.
- High-quality furniture waxes or specialized care oils for lacquered wood surfaces can improve protection but should be used sparingly and only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
These measures help prevent moisture penetration and extend the durability of the surface sealant.
Do you have more specific information or experience with the type of surface finish you are using? This would make it easier to choose the right care products.

Hello Xhulio67,
I would like to explain in more detail the care of Ikea Hemnes surfaces, because the type of wood and the finish Ikea uses play a key role in how to treat water stains.
Hemnes furniture is usually made from solid pine wood, sometimes sealed with a thin layer of lacquer or clear varnish. This protective layer is water-repellent but not completely waterproof. If water sits on the surface for a long time, moisture can penetrate the wood and leave stains.
My recommendations in detail:
- Immediate removal of wet spots: Do not leave liquids standing, but gently blot with a soft, lint-free cloth and then wipe dry.
- Regular maintenance: I recommend applying a thin layer of furniture wax every 3–4 months. A wax-based product designed for lacquered solid wood is ideal. This creates an additional protective layer that makes water stains less likely.
- Caution with cleaners: Avoid products containing alcohol, ammonia, or harsh solvents. Strong abrasive cleaners can also damage the surface.
Additionally, in situations where you often place water, for example with plants or glasses, you could use small coasters or felt pads to prevent direct contact.
My question: How heavily do you use the furniture and in which rooms are they placed? Kitchen or living room makes a difference regarding care requirements.

- Wipe off water stains immediately
- Use furniture wax regularly
- Use coasters
This prevents most problems with minimal effort.
Additional information:
The cause of water stains on Hemnes surfaces is often due to a combination of moisture and possibly already slightly damaged paint or lacquer layers. Therefore, I also recommend regularly checking the furniture for small scratches or signs of wear and promptly treating them with a suitable paint touch-up pen or wood care product.
For existing stains, gentle home remedies such as gently rubbing the area with a cloth lightly drizzled with olive oil or some wood care oil can be effective. The oils can slightly “stain” the wood, visually reducing the appearance of the stain. However, this should only be tested in an inconspicuous spot.
Mechanical cleaning methods (such as abrasive sponges) and aggressive chemicals should be avoided as they can cause lasting damage to the wood.
In summary:
- Regular maintenance with appropriate furniture wax or care oil
- Immediate removal of moisture
- Use of coasters and protective pads
These three steps are the most important.
