Hello everyone, I want to retrofit lighting in my Billy shelves and am looking for a simple but, above all, safe solution. It’s not just about the appearance for me, but also ensuring that the electrical installation is properly and safely done. I have seen that many LED light strips or individual spotlights can be installed, but I wonder which power supply and wiring options are recommended to avoid risks and keep everything as straightforward as possible.

Are there specific products or methods that have proven reliable? For example, how can power be routed cleanly and safely to the shelf without visible cables and without the risk of a short circuit?

I am also interested in the best way to mount the lighting so that it doesn’t look unattractive or damage the shelves. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Since this thread has already raised some questions, here is a detailed step-by-step guide focused specifically on safety and easy installation:

1. Planning:
- Measure the exact shelf width and height to determine the length of the LED strips.
- Choose 12V LED strips with a self-adhesive back.
- Decide on the type of switch (inline, remote, built-in).

2. Preparation:
- Obtain an LED power supply with about a >20% margin above the planned load.
- If necessary, get cable conduits or clips for securing cables.
- Drill small holes (max. 12 mm (0.5 inch)) in the back panel for cable routing.

3. Installation:
- Clean the adhesive surface with isopropanol.
- Stick the LED strips at the desired position inside the shelf.
- Lay the power cables neatly and secure them with clips.
- Route cables through the drilled holes to the outside.
- Attach the switch unit in an easily accessible location, e.g., on the side under the shelves.

4. Power supply:
- Place the power supply outside the shelf in a well-ventilated and easily accessible spot.
- Connect everything properly with plug connectors or soldered joints plus heat shrink tubing.

5. Test:
- Make sure all connections are secure.
- Turn on the power and test the lighting.

6. Optional:
- Replace the switch with a motion sensor if desired.
- Use dimmable LED strips for better light control.

Thank you very much, the guide is very helpful and provides a good overview.

I have one last question: Since there are different colors and color temperatures for LEDs, which color would you recommend for Billy shelves in the living room? My goal is for the shelves to be well lit, the colors of the books and decorative items to appear natural, and the light not to be too harsh or cold.

Maybe someone has a tip on which Kelvin values are comfortable and practical?

For living rooms and shelves, I generally recommend warm white, around 2700 to 3000 Kelvin.

This color temperature creates a cozy atmosphere, enhances warm tones well, and avoids unpleasant reflections that can occur with very cool or neutral white light.

If you prefer a slightly more neutral ambiance that still doesn’t feel too cool, 3500 K is a good choice.

Avoid running lights or RGB LEDs for continuous use unless you want to create a special mood; in that case, they should be dimmable.

I can fully agree with that!

Especially with the well-known Billy shelves in living rooms, warm light creates a cozy atmosphere – it’s much nicer for reading than harsh bright light. 😉

And if you ever feel like changing things up, just use dimmable strips; you can adjust the brightness anytime and also save electricity. 😊
