Hello everyone, I bought the Ikea Platsa system, but I want to install the cabinets in my rental apartment without drilling, since drilling into the walls is not allowed and I want to be able to move out without leaving damage. The cabinets need to be stable and not tip over, especially when they are tall. Are there any proven methods or alternatives to the included fasteners, which usually require drilling? I was thinking of clamp or tension-based solutions or possibly adhesive strips/hooks that are strong enough. Has anyone had similar experiences and can offer useful advice on how to safely secure Ikea PLATSA without drilling? Thanks in advance!

Ah, the classic rental apartment challenge! I think you always have to get a bit creative in situations like that.

I also tried assembling the PLATSA without a drill—the units themselves are quite stable when placed flat. However, they’re really not secured against tipping over.

You could try using tension rods or something like Tesa Powerstrips, but you have to be very careful about the weight, otherwise they tend to come loose quickly. You might also experiment with heavy-duty double-sided adhesives, which stick really well to smooth surfaces.

For taller furniture, I would still recommend some kind of securing method to prevent injuries. Otherwise, maybe these self-adhesive furniture safety straps that stop tipping could work.

If it helps, PLATSA seems like it can be stacked, so maybe start low and then cleverly fasten the units together. What do you think?

Hello Kotar58,

I think your question is very well thought out. Especially in rental apartments, securing furniture without damaging the walls is an ongoing challenge. There are several options you can try:

- Furniture connectors or angle brackets that are attached to the back of cabinets to stabilize them together.
- Additionally, furniture can be secured against tipping with anti-tip devices, some of which work without drilling using adhesive tapes.
- For wall attachment, there are screw-free systems like tension rods or rail systems that are wedged between floor and ceiling.

It is important to check the ceiling height and wall condition beforehand. Some of these systems can also be reinforced with double-sided mounting tape or strong adhesive tape, but this depends on the weight.

If you like, I can provide more detailed information on the individual systems later.

Use furniture connectors to secure the individual PLATSA modules together. Then place the furniture against the wall and use anti-tip straps with adhesive backing, which are especially suitable for rental apartments. This holds well and helps you avoid making holes.

Another idea: Wedge it vertically between the floor and ceiling. Get strong ratchet straps or pipe clamps; this will keep the shelf stable. This way, you don’t need wall mounting, and usually, the floor and ceiling won’t be damaged.

Great that you’re looking for alternatives to drilling! 🔧 I also installed my PLATSA shelves without drilling by using tension rods that support the shelf from the floor to the ceiling. This holds it very securely and ensures the furniture can’t be tipped over.

Combined with furniture connectors between the PLATSA units, everything feels very stable. Just give it a try—it’s fun too! If you need any help, just let me know, I’m happy to assist!
