Hello everyone, I am about to undertake a project to install IKEA Metod drawers with a soft-close feature myself and have a few questions.

I am mainly interested in the correct procedure for installing these drawers, especially regarding the precise fitting and alignment to ensure the soft-close mechanism works reliably.

I already have the base unit with the Metod cabinets and the drawers including the soft-close rail system. I find the documentation somewhat lacking because, while the assembly of the drawer itself is well explained, the details about the adjustment and mounting on the cabinet side are a bit vague.

- How exactly is the drawer inserted and secured into the guide rails?
- Are there special techniques for fine-tuning to avoid squeaking or sticking movements?
- How can I optimally adjust the soft-close system so that the drawer closes smoothly and quietly?

It would be great if someone with practical experience could share tips here, especially regarding handling the Metod soft-close rails. Thanks in advance!

This is indeed an area where many encounter difficulties.

First, a few facts about installing the Metod drawers with soft-close:

- The rails consist of two parts: one fixed to the cabinet frame and one attached to the drawer.
- When inserting, slide the drawer straight into the rail until you hear it click into place.
- For adjustment, use the side adjustment screws on the rails, which usually allow height and depth changes.

For smooth opening and closing, it is important to align the drawer precisely and check that the soft-close damping engages evenly.

Tip: Make sure not to fasten the rails too tightly or too loosely—small corrections often help here. If the drawer sticks, it’s better to loosen slightly and realign.

I have carefully reconsidered your question and prepared a simple step-by-step guide for installing and fine-tuning the IKEA Metod drawers with soft-close:

- Assemble the drawers: Check the fit, firmly secure the front panels
- Attach the rails to the cabinet body: It’s important to drill precisely and straight, use a spirit level to check
- Attach the rails to the drawer
- Carefully insert the drawer and gently push it back until you hear it click into place
- Now comes the critical part: you can usually adjust the height and the gap to the cabinet using the adjustment screws on the rails. Make small adjustments and test each time
- Test the soft-close mechanism by opening the drawer halfway and closing it slowly; the damper should gently pull the drawer closed completely

Common mistakes:

- Uneven screw mounting causing the drawer to hang crooked
- Over-tightening the screws, which blocks movement
- Ignoring the adjustment screws on the cabinet

My tip: Make fine adjustments in small steps for the best results.

Drawers shouldn’t stick in a soft-close system, unless the installation was sloppy or the material has warped.

In my experience, most problems arise from relying too much on the instructions and working imprecisely. Why always aim for the minimum required tolerances? The downside is that people who aren’t very skilled at DIY eventually get frustrated with the drawers.

If in doubt, it’s worth removing the rails completely, checking everything carefully with a level and tape measure, and reinstalling them – this will save trouble later.

These soft-close mechanisms are not designed for rough assembly; they require careful installation to function properly.

To adjust:
- Open the drawer until the damper is visible.
- Use the small screw (usually at the front of the slide) to adjust the damping force.
- Turn the screw in small steps: more turns increase the damping strength.
- Test closing the drawer after each adjustment.

This prevents the drawer from closing too fast or too slow. The installation should be precise so that nothing sticks or rubs.
