Hello everyone, I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen unit and now face the challenge of fitting the cabinet doors precisely so they fit perfectly within the frame and open and close evenly. It is important to me not only to achieve a clean, visual line but also to ensure that the doors neither sag nor rattle. I have already tried adjusting the doors using the pre-installed adjustment options, but the result is not quite what I wanted. My question to the community is: What steps and tips should I follow when installing and adjusting the Ikea Metod cabinet doors to achieve a perfect fit and smooth operation? Are there any special techniques or troubleshooting methods that have proven effective, especially when dealing with small gaps, unevenness, or alignment issues? All advice and experiences are welcome!

That could be the reason for uneven gaps.

I find it interesting that Ikea and their familiar mass-produced products are often defended as if they were nearly perfect. Of course, there are advantages, but you have to be honest: Ikea’s quality control is not unbeatable. If you don’t have the time for adjusting and reworking, it might be better to opt for more expensive brands. In the long run, that saves stress and frustration. Still, Metod works well for many, but it does pose a challenge.

Interesting points, thanks! For me, it is important to preferably solve this using the existing materials rather than resorting to replacements. Are there any special tricks with hinge adjustment to compensate for minimal differences in gap heights? I have heard that the hinges have adjustable overlay and possibly tilt directions – can you confirm this and explain in more detail? That would be very helpful, as small errors in the gaps are especially noticeable on strongly colored fronts.

The Metod hinges are adjustable in three dimensions:
- Horizontally, the door can be shifted sideways.
- Vertically, the adjustment is usually made by the mounting screws in the doors or by the height of the drill holes.
- The gap (distance between the door and the cabinet body) can be adjusted via a small screw on the hinge mechanism.

For accurate results, the following steps should be followed:
- Fully assemble the doors before installation.
- Screw in the hinges, but leave all screws loose.
- Hang the doors on the cabinet bodies.
- First, adjust the height so that no door is sagging.
- Then align sideways so that all gaps are even.
- Finally, adjust the gap to achieve an even spacing.

Following this step-by-step process ensures a clean alignment. A gap of 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) is normal; less is almost impossible to achieve.

I can well understand how frustrating it can be when, despite all efforts, everything still doesn't fit perfectly. I experienced something similar with my Metod doors. What helped me was patience – not everything will be perfect like a professional’s work. I also made it a habit to observe the doors for a few days after adjusting them and make further tweaks if necessary, because the wood and fittings often settle a bit over time. It’s a process that takes time. I also believe that a minimal gap actually contributes to durability, as door edges could otherwise get stuck due to heat or moisture.
