Hello everyone,
I am planning to install drawer slides in my Ikea Pax wardrobe to optimize its use and create more order. Since I want to install the slides myself, I am wondering about the best way to do this. Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which drawer slides are most suitable for the Ikea Pax (e.g., what dimensions, load capacity)?
- How exactly should I attach the rails to the side panels of the Pax without compromising the wardrobe’s stability?
- Are there specific screws or fastening methods that IKEA recommends or that have proven effective?
- How should I position the slides to ensure smooth operation and avoid any blockages?
I have already looked at the Pax assembly instructions, but the information is quite general and does not go into detail regarding drawer slides. Maybe someone here has experience and can offer advice on how to install the drawer slides correctly and safely in the Pax?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Also, I wonder who still really looks for simple solutions when Ikea already supplies everything suitable.I think that’s a bit of an oversimplification. Not everyone wants or can use the original Ikea drawer slides; sometimes custom solutions are necessary, especially for special dimensions or when a higher load capacity is required.

How do I position the drawer slides so they run smoothly and don’t get stuck? Here’s an important tip: always use a spirit level and check the distance between both sides while drilling. Installing one rail slightly higher or lower will cause the drawer to sit at an angle and get stuck.
One more note: after installation, watch out for dust and wood shavings in the guide rails—they can significantly reduce sliding performance.

When attaching the rails in a Pax unit, there are pre-drilled holes available, which you should definitely use because they have been structurally tested.
For a proper installation:
- Check the hole spacing
- Tighten screws with the correct torque, but avoid over-tightening
- If in doubt, it is advisable to do a trial assembly before fully fastening the screws
This will help prevent frustration.

I have already reviewed the assembly instructions for the Pax, but the information provided is quite general and does not go into detail regarding the drawer slides.I felt the same way. That’s why I decided to proceed with patience and a careful touch rather than strictly following the instructions. This was especially important for the drawer slides, as otherwise they can rub or get stuck. Try adjusting step by step; this builds confidence and helps you find the correct position.
Keep at it; it’s worth the effort!

Typical mistakes include incorrectly aligning the rails or drilling holes too deep, which causes the rail to fit too loosely.I fully agree with this. Precision is crucial. It helps to temporarily fix the rail using tape or a clamp, then check the fit before finally securing it with screws.
This step often saves the need for rework.
