Hello everyone, I’m looking for a good solution to secure my IKEA Billy shelves without drilling holes into the wall. The problem is, I’m renting and not allowed to make any holes, so I want to safely fix the shelves to the wall without damaging it. Does anyone know practical methods or alternatives to stabilize the Billy shelves? It’s important to me that the fixing method prevents the shelves from tipping over under normal book loads. Thanks for your ideas and experiences!

I would like to know if you can describe the surface of your wall (wallpaper, plaster, texture)?

Thank you for the detailed summary. The wall has a smooth plaster finish with matte paint, no textured wallpaper or similar, so it is actually quite even. The shelf will mostly hold books of normal size, nothing extremely heavy. It would be interesting to know if adhesive solutions are truly durable on this wall surface, or if clamp systems are generally recommended instead.

Hello, here is a brief addition regarding adhesive solutions:

For smooth plaster surfaces, high-quality mounting tapes are generally suitable but should be applied carefully. A common mistake is applying them directly onto dusty or slightly damp areas, which significantly reduces adhesion strength. Alternatively, solvent-free adhesive pads can be recommended, as they leave fewer residues. In general, you should consider the load level and additionally secure items against tipping over.

Hello Hugo51, I would like to provide you with a simple step-by-step guide for installing anti-tip safety devices without drilling:

1. Thoroughly clean the wall surface behind the shelf using isopropanol.
2. Wait until the surface is completely dry.
3. Attach the adhesive pads or mounting tape centered at the upper part of the shelf.
4. Press the shelf firmly against the wall with moderate pressure for 60 seconds.
5. Wait at least 12 hours before applying maximum load.

Important: Use only high-quality products that are suitable for vertical loads. This method can noticeably improve stability.

Straps between the shelf and the ceiling or floor are also a good option. No drilling is required—just attach and adjust them easily. This prevents tipping without damaging the wall.

I can confirm that! I used this method myself, and it even looks quite modern. If done cleverly, it’s hardly noticeable and works great. When tightening, make sure nothing is pressing too hard or damaging the wall 😉

Very important. When using tension straps, you should always use protective layers made of felt or rubber at the contact points, because constant pressure can otherwise cause minor damage to paint and plaster. Be careful with high ceilings as well, checking if the ceiling structure can safely bear the load.
