Good evening everyone, I’m currently facing a challenge and hope the community here can help with some ideas. My problem is: How can I expand the storage space in the Ikea Pax wardrobe as efficiently as possible without completely rebuilding it? I’m using the model with two sliding doors and currently have mostly the standard interior fittings with shelves and hanging rods. I’m looking for ways to better utilize the existing space to store more clothes and accessories. It’s important to me that the solutions are practical and that the flexible nature of the Pax remains intact. Are there any recommended extensions, clever interior arrangement tips, or specific accessories that have proven useful? Thanks in advance for all helpful advice!

That’s a very good question because the Pax system offers many options and variations, but there are some details to consider in order to really optimize the available space.

First, you should take a close look at the types of clothes you want to store. For example, pants can be stored more efficiently using special pull-out trouser racks or hangers that attach directly to the clothing rod. These take up less depth than hanging multiple pairs of pants side by side.

Additionally, it makes sense to combine shelves with different heights, so the space is better adjusted. For T-shirts or sweaters, wider and shallower shelves work better than tall, deep ones.

Another option is to integrate drawers and baskets to store smaller items like accessories or socks. Ikea offers various modular inserts, such as wire baskets that can even be stacked. This way, you make better use of the Pax’s vertical space.

It is particularly important, when rearranging, to distribute the load evenly to avoid stress points.

An often overlooked possibility is to add base height extenders or extra under-cabinets beneath the Pax frame, which can serve as additional storage without altering the main wardrobe.

Finally, a question: Are you already making full use of the sliding doors, or would open fronts or hinged doors be an option? This can affect how the interior space is used.

I recommend buying additional shelves to create more levels.
Also, use wire baskets instead of the old shelves; they are more flexible and easier to access.
Using intermediate shelves for small accessories is also very worthwhile.

One last question: Are you already making optimal use of the sliding doors, or would open options or hinged doors be possible alternatives?

That’s a good point, as many users underestimate how much cabinet doors affect accessibility. When using sliding doors, you lose some visibility and direct access to one side of the cabinet.

My question is: Have you ever considered adding interior lighting to the Pax afterward? This would greatly improve visibility and can also indirectly enhance the feeling of storage space.

Also, keep in mind that the depth of the Pax is fixed. Therefore, it makes more sense to adjust the interior by working with height and width modifications.

A small tip: Instead of relying solely on Ikea accessories, some people try universal cabinet organizers — for example, height-adjustable clothing rods or pull-out pants hangers. This helps maximize capacity without major modifications.
