Hello everyone, I have been using Ikea Besta shelves in my living room for some time now. However, I often notice that they don’t seem very stable with heavy use – meaning frequent loading and unloading, as well as occasional rearranging. Especially when multiple units are combined, the entire structure tends to wobble and appears prone to wear.

My question is: What options are available to efficiently improve the stability of Ikea Besta shelves, particularly under higher load and stress? Ideally, I’m looking for tips that can be implemented using common tools and without requiring major specialty parts.

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hey, great question! 😊 BESTA shelves are quite versatile, but their weakest points are often the connections between individual parts and the back panels. Here’s what you can do:

- First, make sure to tighten all the screws again. Sometimes they’re only hand-tightened, which isn’t enough.
- Then, add reinforcement brackets at the back, ideally small metal angle brackets fixed precisely at the corners—these provide solid support.
- If you’re combining multiple units, I recommend connecting the individual boxes with perforated plates or sturdy screws.
- You can upgrade the back panels by replacing the cardboard backing included in the kit with thin plywood or MDF panels around 3–5 mm (1/8–3/16 inch) thick, which offer much better stability.

A little insider tip: securing the unit to the wall (Ikea usually includes the mounting hardware) will virtually eliminate any wobbling. And don’t be discouraged—after a few assemblies, these shelves become rock solid. 😉

Absolutely, I totally agree with you! When I built mine, I connected several BESTA units as well as some other Ikea elements. It made a huge difference! 😊 Also, it helps to put thicker glides or felt pads underneath if the shelf isn’t standing on a completely level floor.

One more thing: imagine using hose clamps or steel bands to secure the frame additionally. These small helpers stabilize devices everywhere—so why not here? A bit of pragmatism and a love for DIY really go a long way. 👌

I would also recommend swapping the shelves if the unit is used heavily: thinner boards tend to wear out or warp more easily—using 18 mm (3/4 inch) MDF or plywood is better than the original wood.

Hello everyone, I would like to add some additional information regarding the stability of the Ikea BESTA shelves. It is true that the connectors and back panels are the weak points, but the way you use the shelves also affects their durability.

A few more tips that have proven helpful:

- Avoid placing excessively heavy loads on individual shelves. Ideally, you should not exceed a maximum load of about 25 kg (55 lbs) per shelf.
- If you store heavy items, you can install a center support bar or an additional shelf support beam (these are also available separately from the manufacturer).
- Make sure the shelving unit does not wobble by securely fastening it to the wall or adjusting the feet.
- For wall mounting, use special safety anchors (depending on the wall type) that help stabilize the shelf even under heavy use.

Additionally, you can attach small rubber pads or felt pads under the feet to ensure a non-slip and stable standing. For the back panels, you could also use double-sided mounting tape to achieve extra fixation if screws are not sufficient.

I hope these tips are helpful! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
