Hello everyone,

I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA that I really like, but I’ve noticed that over time they show some signs of wear and minor damage. Especially on the surfaces and drawer runners, it becomes clear that they undergo daily use after a few years.

My question is: How can I effectively extend the lifespan of Malm furniture? I’m interested in care methods, repairs, and preventive measures that are specifically suited to the material (particleboard with foil coating) and the construction of the furniture.

What has worked well for you? Are there any particular cleaning or protective products that are better than others? And how can you mainly avoid damage caused by the typically thin panels?

I look forward to your tips and experiences.

To extend the lifespan of Malm furniture, I recommend consistent and proper care.

Since these pieces are typically made of particleboard with a foil or melamine coating, the most important thing is to protect the surfaces from moisture and physical damage. Use only a damp, well-wrung cloth for cleaning and avoid harsh cleaning agents that could damage the coating.

Additionally, using felt pads under the furniture or protecting it from direct sunlight during extended use is advisable to prevent warping or fading.

For edge protection, I also recommend edge banding or transparent edge tapes, which can be applied yourself if needed—this helps prevent chipped edges on the boards.

Regularly tightening screws and checking the joints also contributes to stability.

Important: Any surface damage should be repaired early to prevent moisture penetration, which significantly delays the deterioration of the furniture.

Here is a small maintenance workshop that I recommend to every owner of Malm furniture:

1. Cleaning: Use a microfiber cloth, only slightly damp, to remove dust and dirt. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

2. Protection: If your furniture is placed in high-traffic areas, use coasters for drinks or rubber-backed trays to prevent moisture from seeping in.

3. Edge care: The edges are especially vulnerable; applying special edge lacquer pens or repairing with edge banding from a hardware store helps. There are also self-adhesive protective films that provide long-term protection against scratches.

4. Mechanism maintenance: Care for drawer slides and fittings with a small amount of oil or silicone spray. Make sure no oil gets on the surfaces.

5. Check screws: Every few months, check and tighten all screws. This prevents unstable constructions and reduces mechanical damage.

6. Location: Do not place furniture directly against exterior walls with high humidity and avoid strong temperature fluctuations.

Common mistakes include overloading drawers and improper cleaning, such as wet wiping with a lot of water. This causes swelling and unsightly bubbles under the laminate.

Brief summary:

- Wipe damp cloth sparingly and carefully
- Use felt pads
- Regularly tighten screws
- Protect edges
- Avoid dry air

These are the key points for protecting Malm furniture.

I completely agree and would like to add: The combination of mechanical protection (e.g., felt pads) and proper surface care is essential. The moisture level in the environment plays a major role, as particle boards can swell if humidity is too high and shrink if the air is too dry. A humidifier during dry winter months can work wonders here.

I recommend applying these sparingly and precisely—otherwise, oils can damage the surface. Silicone spray is generally better suited because it doesn’t stick or harden.

For repairing foil laminates, some manufacturers offer special repair kits. Also, filling small scratches with color-matched wax sticks can significantly improve the appearance.

An important question for the original poster: How heavily used is the furniture? Do you have children or pets that cause extra wear? This can influence the necessary measures.
