ᐅ How can I improve the everyday stability of IKEA Besta furniture?

NamageHello everyone, I own several IKEA Besta furniture units and have noticed that they often lose stability in everyday use, especially when storing heavier items or moving them frequently. My question is: what practical and long-lasting measures do you recommend to improve the stability of these furniture pieces during daily use? I am interested in both simple tips and possible reinforcements or structural additions. Advice on optimal assembly and wall mounting is also welcome. Thanks in advance for your tips!
First of all, it is important to ensure proper assembly. With Besta furniture, the joints are often the weak points. I recommend tightening all fasteners again since screws tend to loosen with use. Additionally, it is advisable to install angle brackets or metal corner braces on the inner corners. These significantly increase lateral stiffness.
Another important aspect is wall mounting: the Besta series includes wall anchors that should definitely be used, as they reliably prevent tipping or wobbling. If your furniture pieces are very tall or wide, an internal cross brace can also be useful—for example, a narrow plywood panel installed inside.
As a final step, I would recommend checking the floor level and, if necessary, placing small wooden wedges under the feet to ensure the furniture stands perfectly flat. If available, you should also check the included connector dowels to see if they fit tightly or if they can be replaced with stronger ones.
Could you briefly describe whether your Besta furniture is used exclusively for lighter items or also for heavier loads such as audio equipment or books? This influences the appropriate reinforcements.

Could you briefly describe whether your Besta furniture is used exclusively for lighter items or also for heavy loads like hi-fi equipment or books?Good question, bapar. My Besta units serve as a TV stand with hi-fi equipment on top and usually books and some decorations below. The sections where books are stored are often quite heavily loaded, so definitely several kilograms (pounds) in a limited space. The TV stand itself usually rests on laminate flooring and is not moved, but it must withstand the weight and pressure from the equipment.

What thickness would you recommend, for example? And what is the best way to install it without losing the furniture’s aesthetic?
To improve the stability of IKEA Besta furniture in everyday use, I recommend three key measures:
- Use the supplied wall brackets: they effectively prevent tipping, especially for heavy or tall units.
- Check and tighten all screw connections after assembly: loose joints are the main cause of instability.
- Add reinforcements in the most heavily loaded areas. For example, metal corner brackets can be installed inside to stiffen the frame.
The idea of using a plywood panel as internal reinforcement is practical. For Besta units, I recommend a thickness of 6 to 8 mm (1/4 to 5/16 inch), as the material is sturdy and easy to work with. The panel can be attached with screws to the back or side walls without significantly affecting the appearance. Alternatively, it can be recessed inside and painted to maintain the furniture’s visual appeal.
These measures significantly increase the stability and lifespan of the furniture.

What practical and durable measures do you recommend to improve the stability of these pieces of furniture in everyday use?Well, you’ve set yourself an ambitious task! 😄 IKEA Besta is known for its flexible design, but when faced with the demands of daily use, these furniture pieces can sometimes run into issues.
What I did: I placed special non-slip felt pads under my Besta modules and never skipped the wall anchors – those are real lifesavers against wobbling. If you want a sturdier and more solid back, I replaced the thin hardboard back panel with OSB boards – that adds a lot more substance.
A little tip: If you distribute more weight on some shelves, simply reinforce the wider shelves underneath with metal brackets doubled up. That makes the difference between wobbly and stable.
Stability often comes down to small details done behind the scenes.

- The panel should not be too thick, otherwise the furniture might not fit properly with doors or drawers.
- Cut the panel cleanly and flush.
- Insert the screws loosely so that the panel vibrates minimally.
Additionally: don’t forget wall mounting. This increases safety, especially with taller shelves.
