Hello everyone,

I have a technical question about the lighting options for Ikea Brimnes furniture. Specifically, I am looking for practical and aesthetically pleasing ways to enhance these pieces, especially the cabinets and display units, using accent lighting. I am interested both in the technical possibilities (e.g., LED strips, spotlights, smart lighting) and design tips that highlight the character of the furniture without making it look cheap or makeshift.

Experiences with hidden lighting, special light colors, or craftsmanship solutions for integrating lighting into the furniture would be very helpful. It is important to me that the overall effect in the room is harmonious and works well with other light sources.

How do you approach lighting for Brimnes, what mistakes should be avoided, and how can a modern yet cozy atmosphere be achieved?

Thank you in advance for your detailed suggestions!

Hello MASONZAR,

Regarding your question about how to visually enhance Ikea Brimnes furniture with lighting, I am happy to provide a simple step-by-step guide with recommendations that have proven effective in practice:

- First, I recommend LED strips with a warm white color temperature (2700-3000 K), as they create a cozy light and can be easily placed behind glass panels or shelves.
- For cabinets with doors, thin, battery-powered LED strips with motion sensors are suitable. These only turn on the light when the door is opened, keeping the lighting subtle and energy-efficient.
- Avoid strong direct lighting that shines on the front surfaces – diffuse or indirect lighting appears more elegant and highlights details.
- If you want to use smart lighting, LED panels controllable via an app for brightness and color adjustment are a good choice. This way, you can customize the ambiance to your liking.
- From a DIY perspective, you can use small aluminum profiles that hold the LED strips and simultaneously act as a diffuser. This prevents harsh shadows and ensures even illumination.

Mistakes to avoid:

- Light that is too bright or cold, which gives the furniture a clinical feel.
- Concealing cables invisibly can quickly become a tripping hazard, so plan enough channels or clips.
- Using too many different light sources without coordination can appear chaotic.

If you like, I can also provide recommendations for specific LED brands that are durable and cost-effective.

I hope this helps you move forward!

I believe focusing on warm, comfortable lighting is very important because many LED solutions can actually feel quite cold or uninviting.

I can only agree with this, as I initially installed overly direct lighting in my own home, which took away from the room’s charm.

It’s also important not to underestimate the planning of power consumption and cable routing, especially if you don’t have much experience with electrical work. Personally, I like to use light strips with integrated dimmers, allowing me to adjust the lighting according to the mood.

It’s worth measuring precisely before purchasing lighting and even creating test setups to ensure the light isn’t too overpowering or too weak afterwards.

LED strips with warm white light and aluminum channels are standard. Avoid bright spotlights, as they do not suit Brimnes.

Simply hiding the cables under the edges of the furniture already makes a big difference.

Additionally: Dimmable LED strips are ideal for the display cabinets in the Brimnes series because they allow precise adjustment of light intensity, giving the glass shelves an elegant glow.

Properly positioned light sources, such as at the top inside the cabinet or mounted between the shelves, ensure even illumination without casting shadows.

For the installation, I also recommend using high-quality transformer modules with overheating protection to prolong the lifespan of the LEDs.

I find the usual LED strips extremely boring. Why not try flat LED panels with adjustable color temperature?

It sounds practical, but I think that's overrated. True design enthusiasts never make visible lighting dependent on opening the door. That’s almost too 'functional.'

Also:
- Why always warm white? I find neutral white (around 4000 K) fresher and better suited to modern furniture design.

Who says you have to stick to the standards?
