Hello everyone, I recently received some wooden parts from IKEA Platsa and now want to clean them as gently as possible without damaging the surface or altering the colors. My wooden parts are mainly made of MDF with a melamine coating, and some have real wood fronts. What cleaning methods would you recommend, especially for everyday dust, fingerprints, or light grease stains? I want to avoid using anything containing harsh chemicals or that could damage the protective layer. Looking forward to your tips!
I really appreciate how careful attention is given to surface maintenance here. Some time ago, I tried something similar but unfortunately used cleaners that were too harsh. Fortunately, the damage was still easy to repair back then. So I can only endorse this advice: less is more. By the way, for really stubborn grease, a small amount of water mixed with vinegar (diluted 1:10) can sometimes help – but please test it on an inconspicuous area before applying it more widely!

Are there any other home remedies that have proven effective without damaging the wood? Maybe lemon juice or baking soda? Or is it better to avoid these?
Regarding home remedies: Lemon juice and baking powder are generally not ideal for melamine-coated and MDF surfaces. Citric acid can damage the surface, and baking powder is often too abrasive, which can cause micro-scratches. I recommend using warm water with mild dish soap instead, and occasionally a gentle all-purpose cleaner without ammonia or solvents. If you prefer natural remedies, the vinegar-and-water mixture mentioned earlier is a good option, but be sure to test it first!
I can add this: For people who don’t want to spend ages polishing, IKEA itself also offers small care products specially designed for their furniture. They often do a great job, are gentle, and easy to use. Otherwise, a good old microfiber cloth with warm water and a small amount of dish soap is the best way to keep both your hands and furniture happy—no stress! And trust me, your Platsa will appreciate it when you don’t use harsh chemicals.
In case something is actually spilled or stains occur: Acting quickly is the best strategy. Blot liquids immediately, do not rub, to avoid damaging the surface. I also recommend regularly removing dust before dirt settles. This significantly extends the lifespan and prevents unnecessary cleaning that could stress the material.

Rubbing can microscopically roughen the surface, making it more susceptible to dirt buildup. For this reason, even in everyday cleaning, it is recommended to use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth without a rough texture. When dealing with dusty surfaces, it is better to wipe briefly with light pressure; otherwise, proceed gently only.
