Hello everyone,

I am looking for a gentle but effective method to clean my Ikea Besta furniture when it is heavily soiled. Specifically, I need to remove greasy, dried-on stains and general dirt buildup on the fronts and edges that have accumulated despite regular cleaning.

Of course, I want to avoid using products that could damage the surface or harm the protective coating. Maybe someone has experience with certain cleaning agents, home remedies, or techniques that work well without harming the furniture?

How do you clean your BESTA furniture when it is really dirty, and what would you recommend as dos and don'ts? Are there any particular products you find especially gentle and effective?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I usually use a soft cloth with warm water and a mild dish soap. For tougher dirt, a small amount of vinegar diluted in water can help, but use it sparingly to avoid damaging the paint.

I understand how frustrating it can be to deal with stubborn stains on the BESTA furniture, especially when you want to treat them gently. I had a similar experience when I struggled to remove spilled oil.

After some trial and error, I found that lukewarm water with a mild dish soap helped. Gently rub and avoid soaking the material, as it can absorb too much moisture and swell. Patience is really important here.

It’s also crucial not to use abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners—I’ve had bad experiences with those, as they made the surfaces look like they had been sanded. If it helps, I sometimes use a microfiber cloth afterward to quickly remove moisture and prevent streaks.

Regarding gentle cleaning for heavy soiling, I can recommend the following:

- Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the protective coating on BESTA surfaces.
- A mild dishwashing detergent combined with warm water is usually sufficient.
- For greasy residues, diluted vinegar cleaner works well (approximately 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water). Always apply the solution to a soft cloth, never spray directly onto the furniture.
- It is best to use soft, lint-free cloths, such as microfiber cloths.
- After cleaning, immediately wipe the furniture with a dry cloth to prevent moisture damage.

Professional furniture care products designed for lacquered surfaces can also be helpful, but test them first on an inconspicuous area before use.

I advise against “miracle products” or strong chemicals, as they can cause lasting damage to the surface.

I would like to add from my experience that for heavy dirt on Ikea BESTA, using household remedies left on overnight can help with removal. For example, I placed a cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a bit of dish soap on stubborn grease stains.

Sometimes I was unsure whether this might damage the surface too much, but it turned out to be gentle if you are careful and don’t rub too hard. It is important to dry the furniture thoroughly afterward.

Do I understand correctly that you apply the vinegar water spray first with a cloth instead of spraying directly onto the furniture? How do you prevent streaks and water spots using this method?

That's exactly how I do it. Spray onto a cloth and then wipe. This avoids too much moisture and those unsightly water marks.
