Hello everyone,

I have owned an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe system for some time, and I’m experiencing a problem where one of the doors squeaks when I open or close it. The noise mainly occurs when the hinges move, which is probably due to the mechanism.

I have already tried adjusting the hinges, but that did not stop the squeaking. Therefore, I am interested if anyone here has experience or proven methods to fix the squeaky doors on this specific model—ideally without having to replace the entire part.

Specifically, I’m interested in:
- Which lubricants or maintenance products are suitable for the hinges of the Brimnes?
- Are there any tips for taking the hinges apart or cleaning them without causing damage?
- Do certain screws need to be tightened or adjusted to eliminate the noise?

I would appreciate a detailed and specific response, as I’m often unsure about what can be done with this type of furniture without taking unnecessary risks.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,

for squeaking IKEA Brimnes doors, I recommend the following procedure:

- Remove the door from its hinges
- Wipe the hinges to remove dust and dirt
- Spray silicone or Teflon spray on the joints; do not use oil, as it attracts dust
- Rehang the door
- If necessary, check and tighten the screws

This is usually enough to eliminate the squeaking.

Absolutely, that’s a great tip! 🙂 I once had that annoying squeaking on my Brimnes door, too. Besides silicone spray, I also used a bit of petroleum jelly – but really sparingly. Otherwise, you’ll soon have grease stains everywhere.

A little patience while letting it work helps as well. I often keep the door closed for a while after lubricating – this helps the lubricant spread better inside the hinge.

And one more thing: when tightening the screws, do it gradually. If you tighten too much, the door can warp and start squeaking somewhere else. So go easy with the screwdriver, test it, then tighten a bit more.

Good luck!

I agree with this and would additionally recommend cleaning the hinges with isopropanol before lubricating to remove old lubricant residues and dirt. This noticeably improves the adhesion of the new lubricant.

Furthermore, I advise carefully inspecting the original metal hinges on IKEA Brimnes doors, as small plastic parts inside the hinge mechanism can sometimes shift and cause noise. In such cases, a slight adjustment with an appropriate screwdriver – usually a Phillips head – helps.

- Carefully open the hinges or remove the door
- Visually check for damaged or misaligned parts
- Clean with isopropanol – make sure to let it dry completely
- Use a high-quality silicone spray, as it does not harden or gum up
- Tighten the hinge screws, but do not overtighten, as this can loosen the fastening

These steps are scientifically supported and effective for sustainably preventing mechanical squeaking noises.

Best regards.
