Hello everyone, I recently assembled some IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and have noticed that some screws have become loose in certain areas. This causes the furniture to feel slightly wobbly, especially with frequent use of the cabinet doors and drawers. My question is: How can I effectively fix loose screws in IKEA Metod furniture? Are there proven methods to protect the material and prevent the screws from loosening again? Which tools and aids would you recommend for this? I am mainly concerned with the connections between the cabinet carcass and fittings, as well as the screws in the drawer slides and hinges. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Simply tighten loose screws without using excessive force on the screwdriver. If the hole is worn out, a small wooden wedge or a toothpick inserted into the hole often helps before reinserting the screw.

A common reason for loose screws in Metod furniture is the soft particleboard. To address this, I would recommend: - First, check if the screw has the correct thread. - For stripped holes, inserting wooden dowels or wood glue mixed with small wood shavings can help stabilize the material again. - Then carefully screw into the repaired hole without applying excessive torque, which increases durability. - Additionally, you can use thread lockers if there are constant vibrations in your setup.

Thank you, that already sounds like a good approach. How exactly should I best fix wooden dowels into an existing screw hole? Do I need to completely drill out the old hole? And can I then reuse the screw in the same spot? I would appreciate a detailed step-by-step guide if possible. Also, instead of wood glue, would regular wood filler be sufficient?

For a reliable repair of worn screw holes in IKEA Metod furniture, the following procedure is recommended: - Slightly enlarge the old, damaged hole by drilling to about 8 mm (0.3 inches) diameter to create a clean starting point. - Coat a suitable wooden dowel with wood glue and insert it into the drilled hole. - Allow the glue to fully cure, at least 12 hours. - Afterwards, mark or lightly pre-drill the hole for the appropriate screw size. - Carefully screw in the screw. - Wood filler is not ideal for permanent reinforcement, as it does not provide the mechanical strength of glue combined with wood. - If necessary, use screw locking adhesive to reduce the chance of loosening again.

This method ensures the best stability and durability.

Wood filler is great for small repairs on wooden surfaces, but for load-bearing joints or where a lot of weight is involved, I would recommend using traditional wood glue with wooden dowels. That simply holds better. Plus, wood glue cures fully and bonds the parts almost permanently – almost like they were originally screwed together. Good luck! And if you ever feel the screwdriver slipping, try a small repair with wooden dowels – it really makes a difference! 😉
