I have an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet door that has been making a very unpleasant squeaking sound every time it opens and closes for some time now. The noise seems to come from the hinges, and I suspect they either need to be adjusted or lubricated. Since I don’t want to remove the door and I’m not exactly sure which parts are involved, my question to the community is: What is the best way to fix a squeaky IKEA Metod door? What tools and materials do I need for this, and are there any specific tips or recommendations for maintaining the hinges to keep the squeaking from coming back? A step-by-step guide would be great, ideally also with advice on whether I need to take the door off for this or if it can be done in place.

I once had a door that was installed crooked – as a result, the hinges were overloaded and caused the squeaking.

This is an important point. I strongly recommend aligning the door properly. Metod hinges offer three adjustment options: lateral, height, and depth. If the door is not properly positioned, the hinges can remain under constant stress and start to squeak.

I have now inspected the door more closely and tightened the screws on the back of the hinges. I noticed that one of the screw holes is slightly elongated, and the screw was a bit loose. However, the hinge mounting is not damaged.

I then carefully sprayed some silicone spray on the joints and opened and closed the door several times. The squeaking has become noticeably quieter but is not completely gone yet.

Following your suggestions, I will adjust the door today to see if that improves the rest. Thank you so far for the helpful advice!

This is normal after the initial treatment. The door might still be slightly misaligned, or the damping mechanism could already have minor wear. I recommend carefully adjusting the door’s alignment and possibly applying a bit more lubricant after a few days. Sometimes it takes a few load cycles for the lubricant to reach the areas where it is really needed.
