Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Metod kitchen drawer that has been making a pretty loud and annoying squeaking noise when opening and closing for some time now. The noise seems to come from the rails or runners, but I’m not sure if maybe some plastic part or the rollers are also involved.

Before I start experimenting with any home remedies, I would like to know how to properly and effectively stop the squeaking in a Metod drawer. Is there a recommended lubricant, special steps for removing the drawer, or general tips on how to avoid damaging the construction?

It would also be important for me to know whether the rail should be completely disassembled or if a simple treatment on site is sufficient.

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers, preferably with a brief explanation of how or why it works.

Hello Bine58,

The squeaking in Ikea Metod drawers is usually caused by the metal drawer slides, which can produce noise due to dryness or dirt.

My tip: Use a high-quality silicone spray or a Teflon spray specifically designed for plastic and metal sliding surfaces. This will help the slides move smoothly without damaging the plastic.

It is important to fully extend the drawer before spraying and, if possible, slightly pull the slides apart to get the spray into the entire mechanism. Avoid petroleum- or oil-based lubricants, as they can damage the plastic.

Disassembling the slides is generally not necessary unless there is visible heavy dirt or damage. Usually, cleaning with a lint-free cloth followed by spraying is sufficient.

Best regards

I wonder if silicone spray is always the best option. Does anyone have evidence that Teflon or silicone is always better than, for example, a grease?

Especially with the Ikea Metod systems, I find that many rely on conventional oils or greases that last significantly longer. It really depends on how heavily the drawers are used.

In general, I’m interested if anyone has tracked the lifespan of sliding surfaces using different maintenance methods. Ideally, you should also consider whether the lubricants attract dust, which could clog the mechanism over time.

Regarding the question of how to fix a squeaking Ikea Metod drawer: I recommend a step-by-step approach.

- First, fully pull out and remove the drawer. With Metod, this is usually very easy, as the runners often have clip mechanisms or release levers.

- Thoroughly clean the drawer runners with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust, debris, and old lubricant residues. If possible, use cotton swabs by hand to reach all corners.

- Check the plastic rollers and glide pieces: these must not have cracks or crumbling, as material fatigue often occurs in the Metod system.

- Then use a special Teflon or silicone spray. These are suitable because they are thin and spread well without becoming sticky.

- When applying, I recommend spraying a small amount first, then reattaching the drawer and opening/closing it several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

- Afterward, lubricate again if needed, but not too much to avoid attracting dust.

- If noises persist, it is better to check everything again – the drawer might be misaligned, or screws may be loose, causing vibrations.

A quick question for Bine58: Have you already removed the drawer, or is it still installed? Is it subject to light or heavy use? Are there any signs of damage to the runners or plastic parts? This information helps to assess the best course of action.

I support this question, as the specific usage patterns and level of stress are crucial.

Also: If the drawers are not running smoothly anymore, squeaking noises can just be a symptom. Sometimes tension springs in the slide or plastic parts are slightly bent, which is easy to overlook.

Often a combination of cleaning, slight readjustment of the slide rail mounting, and lubricating with a suitable product helps.

My additional tip is to always choose maintenance products that contain neither oil nor petroleum jelly–based substances, as these can cause the plastic parts to stick or degrade over time.

You can also try treating the slide with graphite powder, which does not stick, but this is not always effective on plastic molded parts.

I’m curious if Bine58 can provide more details.
