Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a project to repaint my IKEA PLATSA system because I find the standard colors a bit boring. The main question I have is: How do I choose the right paint for IKEA PLATSA that adheres well to the material and also looks good?

I understand that PLATSA is made of a special laminate or painted MDF panels, but I am concerned that conventional paints might not stick properly or could damage the surface.

Another question is about the color shade: How can I select a color that fits well with my room and blends harmoniously into my interior design? I would also be interested to know if there are any recommended preparation techniques or primers to use before applying paint.

I would appreciate tips on suitable types of paint, brand recommendations, or experiences with alternative painting methods like chalk paint or spray paint.

I’m looking forward to your responses – thanks in advance!

Hello MEOGA,

Your question is very well posed, and I appreciate that you pay close attention to the material properties. Here is a structured approach to help you find and apply the right paint:

- Material check: IKEA PLATSA is usually made of melamine-coated wood-based panels. This means that conventional paints often do not adhere well because the surface is very smooth and durable.

- Preparation: The most important step is to sand the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit around 240-320) to improve paint adhesion. After sanding, thoroughly remove dust.

- Primer: Be sure to use a bonding primer specifically designed for plastics or melamine, often available as an “adhesion-promoting primer.” This ensures a firm hold of the topcoat.

- Types of paint: Acrylic paints or two-component (2K) paints are well suited. Chalk paint can work but also requires sealing with wax or clear coat, as it is otherwise not very durable.

- Color tone: It is best to bring your room colors and test sample strips, preferably not only digitally, but on real test pieces or small hidden areas.

- Finish: For protection, a clear coat or sealer is recommended—either matte or satin finish, depending on your preference.

Summary: Sand, adhesion-promoting primer, then acrylic or 2K paint, followed by clear coat.

Hope this helps you with your PLATSA project!

I can only confirm that! I once tried to paint my PLATSA with regular wall paint and ended up with huge bubbles and peeling afterwards.

A friend then recommended thoroughly sanding with 240-grit sandpaper first and using a sprayable primer – that made a big difference.

Exactly! I was hesitant at first since chalk paint is trendy, but for furniture that’s used and touched frequently, protection is really important.

MEOGA, if you want to apply the paint, I would recommend not only considering the color but also the durability and ease of maintenance. Especially in kitchens or living rooms, otherwise you might get unpleasant surprises quickly.

By the way, I think your question is really precise and already provides a lot of information, which makes giving advice much easier!

Hello MEOGA and everyone!

I love refreshing furniture, and I have some tips for PLATSA units – as easy and relaxed as life itself 😄

The most important thing: don’t stress too much about the perfect paint. There are great spray paints specially made for plastic and laminated surfaces that stick really well. They’re super easy to apply and come in countless colors.

A bit of preparation is essential, of course: lightly roughen the surface by sanding, as mentioned, then jump into the paint mist 🚀

Exactly, without primer it’s like jumping out of a plane without a parachute. Only with primer do you feel safe – so never skip the bonding primer!

When choosing paint: pick a color that will give you lasting joy. Test colors in plenty of natural daylight. And don’t be afraid to try something bold – how about a cool pastel shade or a deep navy blue? I’ve seen that look several times, and it looks amazing!

PS: If you ever want to repaint later – the paint on PLATSA can be sanded off quite well if something no longer fits 😉

MEOGA,

Your detailed question already suggests that you have some practical experience with painting the PLATSA units, which is important.

I would like to offer you the following additional recommendations:

- For preparation, be sure to use a degreaser such as isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol to remove all grease and dust particles.

- For priming, I find epoxy- or polyester-based primers particularly effective, especially if you want high durability.

- Regarding color, I recommend applying paint samples in advance directly onto a cut-out piece of your PLATSA material to test the exact effect under your lighting conditions.

- Avoid paints with long drying times to prevent dust inclusions.

- If you choose spray paint, use a fine spray nozzle and smooth, sweeping motions to avoid runs.

In summary:
Preparation (sanding, degreasing), suitable bonding primer, choose paint with a high solid content, then seal.

I hope these tips help you with your PLATSA project.
