downundaman1 May 2014 09:37Hello,
We recently moved into our house, which is about 20 years old. I now suspect that there might be some moisture somewhere. The signs are:
- Silverfish in the kitchen, stairwell, hallway/entrance area, guest bathroom (all on the ground floor), bathroom (first floor), laundry room (basement) (a total of about 10-15 during the first 5 nights when we were moving around the house at night, none in the last 2 nights, but traps were set up in the kitchen and laundry room)
- A noticeably high humidity level in the bathroom, guest bathroom, and entrance area
- A slight sewage smell in the guest bathroom and entrance area
It should be noted that there is no musty or moldy smell anywhere and there are no other obvious signs of mold or moisture.
We also make sure to ventilate regularly, although I cannot say if the previous owners did the same.
Should I be concerned or take any measures?
How can I find out if and where moisture has developed?
Thank you and best regards,
downundaman

Doc.Schnaggls2 May 2014 13:28Hello downundaman,
If I were you, I would first borrow or even buy a moisture meter.
You can get these devices online for less than EUR 20.00.
While meters in this price range won’t provide 100% accurate results, they are definitely sufficient as a reference point to identify areas with higher moisture than normal.
Best regards,
Dirk
